Star Wars: Episode VII has been subject to copious rumours since the very first day it was announced in late 2012.

With production in full swing and a cast announced, rumours for the most part have dried up. However there are still two key pieces of information about the film that Disney and LucasFilm have yet to officially announce: the title and the plot.

Take a large pinch of salt with this one of course, but a rumour has been circulating regarding the film's plot that sounds both plausible and quite awesome.

Warning: While these are just rumours they could be a big potential spoiler regarding the film's basic plot.

Making Star Wars reports a source that says the film will be about a villainous group known as "Jedi Hunters" who, as their title suggests, are intent on finding and wiping out the remaining Jedi.

"These are scary individuals, dressed in black, some helmeted, that hunt Jedi for the Empire," reads the story.

Giving further explanation, the report says that Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong'o and unconfirmed actor David Oyelowo will be playing the Jedi Hunters.

It is also reported that Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker will have been fighting to stop these Hunters for the 30 years since Return of the Jedi in the story, and that the Hunters have a goal – to resurrect a Sith lord long thought to be dead.

To reiterate this is only a weak rumour at this point, but certainly an interesting one. It's an idea that hasn't been explored in the series to date and would represent something different, but still familiar and within what has been established in the last six movies.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be released on 18 December 2015.
