A teenage student was struck by an SUV displaying a Trump flag during a peaceful anti-ICE protest outside Fremont High School in Nebraska on Thursday, in what police are investigating as a hit-and-run. The incident, captured on video, unfolded as dozens of pupils walked out of classes to demonstrate against recent immigration enforcement actions, part of a wider wave of unrest sparked by a fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis.

The girl was taken to hospital alert and conscious, while the driver fled after a brief pause. Authorities have yet to make arrests, but footage has spread rapidly online.

The Incident at Fremont High

The protest kicked off around 2pm when roughly 150 students left their lessons, carrying handmade signs and chanting against ICE policies. School administrators were on hand to monitor the gathering and ensure it remained peaceful.

A red SUV with a Trump flag attached pulled up near the group. The driver, who appeared to be a high school-aged male, stepped out and argued briefly with some protesters before climbing back in.

He revved the engine loudly and surged forward, directly into a female student standing a few feet ahead, facing the vehicle with her sign raised. She was knocked aside by the impact. As an administrator approached the SUV, the driver hesitated momentarily before accelerating away from the scene. Emergency services arrived swiftly, and the injured girl interacted positively with responders en route to medical treatment.

Video shared on X by verified account Dr. Gichuho Mungai clearly depicts the sequence, including the flag and the vehicle's departure. Witnesses described the atmosphere shifting from spirited to chaotic in seconds.

Behind the Anti-ICE Outcry

This local demonstration stems from escalating national tensions over immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. It was triggered by the 7 January shooting of Renee Good, a US citizen, by an ICE agent during a raid in Minneapolis. Good suffered multiple gunshot wounds in her vehicle, with records revealing chaotic scenes and frantic emergency calls.

The killing ignited protests nationwide, including school walkouts like Fremont's, as communities decry raids targeting families, schools, and even medical sites. In Minnesota, agents have been accused of racial profiling and excessive force against bystanders. Similar violence marred a rally in Santa Ana, California, on 9 January, where 21-year-old student Kaden Rummler lost sight in one eye after being hit by a federal non-lethal projectile at close range.

'This constitutes as deadly force,' remarked Ed Obayashi, a sheriff's deputy and legal advisor, noting protocols against aiming at the face. Such incidents have fuelled claims of overreach, with lawsuits from cities like Minneapolis seeking to curb federal operations.

Official Reactions Roll In

Nebraska leaders quickly denounced the Fremont event. State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh added it was 'hardly a surprise' amid heated national rhetoric. Senator Justin Wayne echoed, 'This is not what we do in Nebraska.'

Fremont Police confirmed they are reviewing evidence, including videos, but no suspects have been named yet. School district officials emphasised the protest was unsanctioned but supervised for pupil safety.

As of 30 January 2026, the student's condition is stable, with no further updates released. The hit-and-run probe continues, highlighting persistent divides in the debate over ICE actions and supporter responses.
