The Swedish Royal Family showed us how summer fashion is truly done in their most recent family portrait. A picture of happiness, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia were at the centre of the beautiful shot spanning three generations.

The royal couple – who have been married since 1976 – appeared delighted to sit for the photograph alongside their children and grandchildren, and sat on a white bench with second-in-line to the throne, four-year-old Princess Estelle between them. The rest of the family stood behind them against a luscious backdrop of immaculately trimmed hedges and greenery in the idyllic grounds of Solliden Palace in Borgholm.

King Carl and Queen Silvia's three children, Crown Princess Victoria – the couple's eldest daughter at 39 and apparent heir to the throne – along with Prince Carl Phillip and Princess Madeleine. They stood with their partners and their five children between them.

Three-month-old Prince Alexander made his portrait debut in a grey sweater and white trousers. He barely opened his eyes as he peacefully nodded off in his mother Princess Sofia's arms, who was vibrant in a blue blouse and white skinny jeans. Four-month-old Prince Oscar looked equally endearing in a blue all-in-one and seemed intrigued by the family experience.

Their cousin, one-year-old Prince Nicolas, also stuck to the blue, cream and pink memo in a cute pale blue shirt and light cream chinos, while youngest daughter of the King and Queen, 34-year-old Princess Madeleine, was the most fashion-forward in a bird-print high-neck blouse by Valentino.

Queen Silvia, 72, who is known for her penchant for bright colours, aimed to stand out in her bright fuschia jacket as her husband kept it smart-casual in a cream blazer, grid-print shirt and light blue chinos.

Earlier this week, Prince Carl Philip and his wife Princess Sofia took Prince Alexander to his first soccer game near the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The youngest member of the Swedish royal family will be baptized on 9 September in the Royal Chapel – the same venue as his slightly older cousin, Oscar.
