Three Arrested After Woman Dies in A8 Crash as Mercedes Occupants Flee Scene on Foot

Three people have been arrested after a 58-year-old woman died in a four-car crash on the A8 near Edinburgh Airport. Police Scotland said the occupants of a grey a Mercedes A250 left the scene on foot before officers arrived following the collision on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the A8 Glasgow Road near Newbridge, close to the Royal Highland Showground at Ingliston, at around 9.25am.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash: a grey Mercedes A250, a black Renault Captur, a grey Skoda Karoq and a grey Hyundai i30. The driver of the Hyundai, a 58-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by paramedics.

Police Scotland said on Tuesday that two women, aged 19 and 23, and a 32-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the crash. No charges have been announced and enquiries are continuing.

Four other people were taken to hospital for treatment and have since been discharged. Police have not provided further details about their injuries.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it sent three ambulances, two special operations response teams, a paramedic response unit and a critical care paramedic to the scene.

Police Investigate Mercedes After Fatal A8 Crash

Police said three people who had been travelling in the grey Mercedes left the scene on foot in the immediate aftermath of the collision, before officers arrived.

Air support and the dog unit were deployed as police searched the surrounding area, but the three were not immediately traced. Inspector Thomas Mallinson had previously appealed for information to help identify the people who left the scene.

The arrests followed that public appeal. Sergeant Mike Thomson, of Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit, said: 'Our thoughts remain with the family of the woman who died. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.'

Police Scotland has not released the woman's name, and her family have not issued a statement.

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage showing the Mercedes or the other vehicles involved before the collision.

A8 Reopens After Hours of Disruption Near Edinburgh Airport

The crash caused significant disruption on one of the main approaches to Edinburgh Airport, with the A8 closed for several hours while police investigated the collision. The road was closed between Newbridge and the airport before reopening at around 7.05pm.

Drivers heading to the terminal were advised to use the M8 and city bypass via Gogar, with delays reported on surrounding routes.

Tom Brumfitt, 69, who lives in a row of cottages beside the road, said he heard 'loud bangs' when the collision happened, followed by a man running past his window shouting for help.

It is not clear how the man was connected to the crash.

'It was just mayhem. It was the worst scenario I had seen outside for a long time,' Brumfitt said. 'There was an almighty bang, a van partly on its side and then someone running past shouting for help. By the time I had got out, they had gone. The helicopter was over us later on, obviously looking for the people involved.'

Another resident, Paul Dow, said he heard 'several large crashes and bangs' while working at home before opening his front door and finding wrecked vehicles across both carriageways.

Photographs from the scene showed a Renault Captur overturned on its roof, while another vehicle was screened off by police.

Police Scotland said enquiries, including collision reconstruction, vehicle checks and witness interviews, remain ongoing.
