Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood Faces 17 Charges Involving Nine Women After Two Further Charges

Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood is now facing 17 sexual offence charges involving nine women, after prosecutors authorised two further counts, the Metropolitan Police said on Thursday.

The new charges relate to an alleged indecent assault of a girl aged 16 or 17 in Hammersmith and Fulham in 1991, and an alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman in Wandsworth in May 2004.

They add to 15 existing charges, which were authorised in October 2025 and include four counts of rape and multiple indecent and sexual assaults said to have taken place between 1983 and 2016.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Catherine P Baccas said the Crown Prosecution Service had 'authorised two further charges of sexual assault and indecent assault against Tim Westwood', relating to 'separate reports of non-recent offences in 1991 and 2004 involving two additional women'.

She said prosecutors had assessed the Metropolitan Police file and found 'sufficient evidence to bring these additional charges to court', and that doing so was in the public interest. The CPS has also reiterated that Westwood has the right to a fair trial.

Westwood, 68, of Westminster, has previously denied any criminal wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty last December to 15 earlier charges at Southwark Crown Court, including four counts of rape, nine of indecent assault and two of sexual assault. He has said he 'strongly denies all allegations of inappropriate behaviour'.

Allegations Stretch Across Three Decades

The CPS says the charges relate to reported non-recent offences spanning 1983 to 2016, during which Westwood moved from pirate radio to become a prominent British hip hop DJ.

Among the original 15 charges are alleged indecent assaults involving a 17-year-old girl in Fulham in 1983 and a woman in her 20s in Vauxhall in 1986, as well as three alleged indecent assaults at BBC Studios in 1996, while Westwood was presenting BBC Radio 1's first dedicated rap show.

The Met's original charging announcement confirms the earlier allegations and states that the 15 charges concerned seven women.

Other charges include the alleged rape of a woman aged 17 to 18 in London between 1995 and 1996, and the alleged rape of a woman in her 20s in London in 2010, along with alleged sexual assaults in Stroud in 2010 and Finchley in 2016. These allegations remain matters for the criminal courts and have not been proven.

It was confirmed Westwood has now been charged with one count of indecent assault and one of sexual assault over the latest allegations, and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on a date yet to be fixed. A trial on the original 15 charges is due to begin at Southwark Crown Court on 25 January 2027.

Police Highlight Support and Fair-Trial Requirements

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said: 'The women who have made reports have placed their trust in us, and we remain committed to providing them with all available support,' pointing to Rape Crisis's 24-hour Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.

He urged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence to contact police or specialist support services. Police also reminded editors, publishers and social media users to follow Attorney General's Office guidance and seek advice where necessary to avoid prejudicing proceedings.

Westwood left his Capital Xtra show in April 2022 after allegations about his behaviour were publicly reported, and has not returned to mainstream radio since. The CPS reiterated that criminal proceedings are active and that Westwood 'has the right to a fair trial'.
