Some supporters of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump are calling for the disenfranchisement of women after polls by FiveThirtyEight showed him winning if only men voted. Trump's legion of supporters are tweeting #RepealThe19th in a social media bid to do away with the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight published two polls on Tuesday (12 October) showing what the results of the election would be if only women voted and what it would be if only men voted. As expected, the results were vastly different if only one gender were allowed to vote.

Results from female voters showed Democrat Hillary Clinton would easily win the general election with 458 electoral votes to Trump's 80. However, the poll of just male voters put Trump in the clear with 350 electoral votes to Clinton's 188.

According to the Huffington Post, shortly after Silver tweeted the two polls, Trump supporters responded with the hashtag #RepealThe19th. Trump's son, Eric, also used the male-only map in a fundraising email to inspire supporters, BuzzFeed News reported. He failed, however, to mention that the map only showed men voting.

Supporters reasoned that women should be denied the right to vote in order to ensure a Trump win. "If women are the only thing stopping the Greatest President this country has ever seen - why not #RepealThe19th?" one person commented.

However, in the hours since the hashtag began trending, it has been overtaken by women noting the absurdity of the thought. "#Repealthe19th? Seriously? You think this is bad, we haven't even had the vote for a full 100yrs yet – sit back, we're just getting started," Breanna Murphy tweeted.

Kate Black added: "Trump supporters: We're using #RepealThe19th in response to math showing women can decide this election. Women: Sorry, we're busy voting."
