Trump's Border Patrol Boss Gregory Bovino Spotted Driving West After Being Axed Over Alex Pretti Shooting
Bovino exits Minneapolis for California after fatal border patrol shooting

Following the public outcry and immense political pressure resulting from the fatal shooting of VA ICU nurse Alex Pretti, the 'commander at large' has been effectively removed from the theatre of operations. While Trump's 'border czar', Tom Homan, has been deployed to Minnesota to manage the fallout, Bovino has embarked on a long, controversial drive back to his former base in California.
Observers have been tracking the ousted official's movements as he traverses the country, heading towards El Centro, California. This location served as Bovino's home base before his assignment to lead the immigration crackdown in the north. Discerning onlookers identified the high-profile convoy as it made its way west, signalling a physical retreat that mirrors his professional departure.
Tracking Bovino's Cross-Country Retreat
According to a source who spoke directly with Bovino—but requested anonymity to protect their employment—the former chief paused his journey on Tuesday evening. He was confirmed to have checked into a hotel in Rapid City, South Dakota, placing him in proximity to one of America's most famous monuments and setting the stage for a bizarre public statement the following morning.
On Wednesday, the 55-year-old Bovino stood before the carved granite faces of Mount Rushmore to record a video message. The clip, which was subsequently shared on X by conservative influencer Nick Sortor, showed Bovino attempting to rally the morale of his 'mean green machine' back in Minneapolis, despite his physical absence from the mission. 'Team, behind me are a few individuals there. That's the original "Turn and Burn", the folks that help make America', Bovino stated in the video, gesturing towards the sculptures of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson.

In the footage, the ousted immigration chief expressed that he was 'very proud' of the work his federal officials had accomplished. He went a step further in his praise, controversially describing his agents as the 'modern-day equivalent' of the figures immortalised on the mountain. This comparison comes at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding the conduct of federal agents under his previous command.
Armed Sightings and Protesters Confront Convoy
The journey continued westward into Wyoming, where the reception was decidedly mixed. A video captured by 24-year-old Wyoming resident Megan Pope on Thursday showed what appeared to be Bovino's convoy departing from a hotel in the southwestern part of the state. Pope, who shared the footage on Facebook, noted that she witnessed Bovino carrying a rifle and observed him waving to onlookers as he prepared to leave.
Tensions reportedly flared during a stop in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Reports indicate that Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to a local hotel on Thursday in response to a disturbance, where a 'small group of protesters' had reportedly gathered, physically preventing federal officers from entering their vehicles in the parking lot. When pressed for confirmation regarding Bovino's journey home, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately provide a comment.

Fatal Shooting That Sparked Political Powder Keg
Bovino's exit was precipitated by an explosion of unrest in the Twin Cities. The atmosphere had been volatile since 7 January, following the death of Minneapolis mother Renee Nicole Good. However, the situation escalated drastically on Saturday with the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA ICU nurse. The incident involving Pretti was captured on video, showing him intervening between federal officers and a woman who had been shoved to the ground. In the ensuing altercation, a group of federal officers punched Pretti and disarmed him of a handgun he was legally carrying but did not brandish. Once he was brought to the ground, he was shot numerous times by the agents.
The two Border Patrol agents involved have been placed on a three-day administrative leave. An official told CNN that Bovino's departure from the city was a 'mutual decision'. This is not the first time Bovino has faced scrutiny regarding firearms; in 2023, he was nearly forced into retirement after posing with an assault rifle in a photo posted to social media. Now, with Homan left to quell the tensions, Bovino continues his drive west.
