Tyrese Haliburton Makes Emotional OKC Return After Escaping '16 Months from Hell' Following Injury
The Indiana Pacers star faced the Oklahoma City Thunder for the first time since rupturing his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals

Tyrese Haliburton returned to the scene of his greatest basketball heartbreak after the Achilles injury that shattered his NBA Finals dream and forced him to miss an entire season.
The Indiana Pacers star faced the Oklahoma City Thunder for the first time since rupturing his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, having described his gruelling recovery as '16 months from hell'.
After an ankle scare briefly threatened to disrupt his comeback, Haliburton's return represents a major emotional milestone in his journey back from one of basketball's most devastating injuries.
A Painful Return To Oklahoma City
The Paycom Center holds painful memories for Haliburton. On 22 June 2025, the guard went down in the opening quarter of the NBA Finals decider against Oklahoma City, leaving the court in visible distress as Indiana's hopes of winning its first NBA championship suffered a devastating blow.
The Thunder went on to secure a 103-91 victory, claiming the title while the Pacers were left to contemplate what might have been. Haliburton's injury also ruled him out for the entire 2025-26 campaign, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his team struggled without its leading playmaker.
Indiana finished the season with a franchise-worst 19-63 record, a dramatic fall for a side that had come within one victory of the NBA championship.
His return against Oklahoma City therefore represents more than another pre-season appearance; it takes him back to the setting of his greatest professional disappointment.
'16 Months From Hell' Finally Behind Him
Haliburton's return to action began on 7 October, when he played against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Pacers' pre-season opener. The game took place at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, where he became a star during his college career with Iowa State.
He played 16 minutes in Indiana's 123-112 victory, recording seven points, six assists, two blocks and one steal. The numbers were secondary to the significance of returning to competitive basketball after more than a year away.
Haliburton later shared his emotions on social media, writing: 'At a loss for words trying to describe tonight. 16 months from hell, but Ames, Iowa was the perfect place to get back to it.'
His return to Ames offered a particularly meaningful setting for the milestone, reconnecting him with the university and supporters who had followed his rise before his NBA career took off.
Ankle Scare Threatens To Disrupt Comeback
His progress was briefly interrupted after he tweaked his right ankle during the Minnesota game. The setback forced him to miss Indiana's subsequent pre-season meeting with the Atlanta Hawks, raising questions about whether he would be available for the emotionally charged return to Oklahoma City.
There was encouraging news ahead of the Thunder clash, however. Haliburton participated in practice without restrictions and was listed in the starting line-up for Tuesday's game. His workload was expected to be managed cautiously as the Pacers prioritised his long-term recovery.
The ankle problem was separate from the Achilles rupture that had kept him out for more than a year, but it highlighted the need for caution as he worked towards regaining full match fitness.
Pacers Hope Their Star Can Lead A Revival
Haliburton's return also offers hope for Indiana after a difficult season. The Pacers struggled without their primary playmaker, and his availability could prove crucial as the franchise attempts to rebuild its competitiveness.
The team has added players including Ivica Zubac, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Larry Nance Jr. as it looks to strengthen its supporting cast. Nevertheless, Haliburton's recovery and ability to remain healthy will be central to its ambitions.
For the guard, facing Oklahoma City brings him back to the moment his championship dream was cut short. His return marks an important step in his recovery, with the Pacers hoping their star playmaker can help lead the team back towards contention.
