A new Twitter account called UkipWeather has been set up in reponse to Ukip councillor David Silvester's comments that flooding in the UK was caused by the legalisation of gay marriage.

Silvester, who defected from the Conservatives in 2012, wrote to David Cameron in 2012 asking him not to press ahead with his same-sex marriage Bill. He said it would "invoke God's wrath".

He said: "Since the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, the nation has been beset by serious storms and floods. One recent one caused the worst flooding for 60 years. The Christmas floods were the worst for 127 years. Is this just global warming or is there something more serious at work?"

Critics have turned to social media sites in an uproar to the latest Ukip member to make the headlines. One of the best - and funniest - reponses to Silvester's comments is from the new Twitter account UkipWeather.

Here is a selection of the best tweets, in celebration of David Silvester. He has since has been suspended from the party, after his outlandish claims.
