US Secretary of State John Kerry has been hospitalised following a cycling accident near Scionzier in the French Alps France, the State Department said.

The 71-year-old is in a stable condition after being flown to Geneva University Hospital suffering a leg injury.

He did not lose consciousness after the accident, and paramedics and a physician were on the scene with his motorcade, reports AFP.

He is in Switzerland for Saturday talks with Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to conclude a nuclear deal, which would see Iran open up its nuclear programme for international inspections in exchange for sanctions being dropped.

The State Department has not revealed how the accident will effect Kerry's schedule, with the top US diplomatic envoy scheduled to fly to Spain today to for a meeting with the king and queen of Spain in Madrid, then on to an international conference in Paris on how best to fight Islamic State.

Kerry's love of cycling is well known, and during a previous round of talks in March he took a break to go on a bike ride near Lake Geneva.
