Instagram has officially rolled out a new 'Reposts' feature in August 2025, allowing users to reshare feed posts and Reels natively within the app. The tool is designed to increase engagement by making content resharing more visible and accessible, and it introduces a new level of user interaction alongside the recently launched Instagram Map.

The changes are now available globally for both iOS and Android users.

What Is the 'Reposts' Feature on Instagram?

The 'Reposts' feature allows Instagram users to reshare other people's public posts and Reels directly to their own profiles. Unlike traditional resharing via Stories or the use of third-party apps, this tool offers a native solution for highlighting content, while still crediting the original creator.

When a user reposts a video or image, it appears in a newly dedicated tab labelled 'Reposts' on their profile, as reported by The Verge. This makes reshared content permanently visible, allowing followers to view what a person has decided to amplify beyond their original posts. It also reflects a similar feature already popular on TikTok, where reposts increase content visibility within users' circles.

Where Can You See Reposts on Instagram?

As explained by Instagram, Reposts appear in several locations within the platform:

  • User Profile: A distinct 'Reposts' tab now sits alongside the grid and Reels tabs. All reposted content is collected here and remains until manually removed.
  • Follower Feeds: Reposted content may also be shown to followers within their home feeds as suggested content, regardless of whether they follow the original creator.
  • Friends Tab: In the Reels section, Instagram now includes a new 'Friends' feed. This stream shows Reels that a user's friends have liked, commented on, reposted, or uploaded, creating a more social discovery environment.

This shift is intended to enhance visibility and foster interaction among close-knit circles, as opposed to focusing solely on algorithm-driven content.

How Long Do Reposts Stay Visible?

Unlike Instagram Stories, which expire after 24 hours, content shared via the new Reposts feature remains indefinitely. Users can only remove reposts manually by selecting and deleting them from their Reposts tab.

However, when a Reel, post, or Note is shared with a location tag and appears on the new Instagram Map, that content is only visible for 24 hours. The Reposts feature and the Map serve different purposes: the former enhances content discoverability, while the latter encourages location-based sharing among trusted contacts.

What Is the New Instagram Map and How Does It Compare to Snap Maps?

Instagram's latest location-sharing addition, Instagram Map, is another tool designed to increase personal interaction. Accessible through the user's DM inbox, the Map feature allows users to share their location with selected friends. Unlike Snapchat's Snap Map, Instagram's version only updates when the app is opened and does not track users in real time.

In addition to location-sharing, content from creators who have enabled location tags may also appear on the Map. This includes public Reels, Stories, Notes, and posts, enhancing discovery through geographical relevance. The feature is opt-in, and privacy settings allow users to control who can view their activity.

Is Instagram Becoming a TikTok or Snapchat Copy?

Instagram's new features borrow elements from both TikTok and Snapchat. The Reposts tab mimics TikTok's resharing functions, while the Map clearly resembles Snap Map's core concept.

However, Instagram has added its own approach by combining location-based discovery with deeper social integration via the 'Friends' tab. These updates mark a continued shift towards making Instagram more interactive and user-centric.
