Why Is Phil Dunster Leaving Ted Lasso? What We Know — And Which Other Cast Members Might Not Return
Why is Phil Dunster leaving the show?

Ted Lasso fans have been quick to notice the absence of Phil Dunster, who plays fan-favourite Jamie Tartt, from the confirmed regular cast list for Season 4. Apple TV+ recently announced that filming has begun for the new series, but Dunster's name is notably missing—sparking questions about whether he will return at all.
Why Is Phil Dunster Leaving Ted Lasso?
According to Radio Times, Dunster's departure as a full-time cast member comes down to scheduling conflicts. The actor recently landed a major role in a new HBO comedy series, produced by Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence, which prevents him from renewing his contract for Season 4.
Dunster addressed the situation on the Always Be Comedy podcast, explaining he has not renewed his contract but would happily return if invited by Jason Sudeikis or the production team.
The show's new storyline will also shift focus from the AFC Richmond men's squad to a women's football team in the second division, naturally reducing screen time for original characters like Jamie Tartt.
Other Cast Members Facing Uncertainty in Season 4
The changes do not stop with Dunster. According to For The Win, the returning status of several key cast members remains unclear. Nick Mohammed (Nate), Sarah Niles (Dr Sharon), Anthony Head (Rupert), Toheeb Jimoh (Sam), Cristo Fernández (Dani), and Kola Bokinni (Isaac) have not been confirmed for the upcoming season. Gus Turner, who played Ted's son Henry, will also not return, with Grant Feely taking over the role due to its new physical demands.
Several original cast members are rumoured to appear in limited or guest roles, signalling a shift away from the familiar AFC Richmond men's team and towards fresh storylines.
Is There a Chance Phil Dunster Could Return?
While a full-time return looks unlikely, sources say Dunster could still appear in a limited capacity. Warner Bros. Television did not pick up his contract option for Season 4, but the door remains open for Jamie Tartt to return in guest episodes or cameo scenes.
Dunster has made it clear he is open to returning if Jason Sudeikis reaches out, giving fans hope they may still see Jamie Tartt in some capacity, even as the series moves in a new direction.
Ted Lasso Season 4 Focuses on New Challenges
Production for Season 4 is already under way, with filming taking place in Kansas City and London. The new storyline sees Ted Lasso taking the reins of a women's football team in a lower division—a significant narrative shift from the previous AFC Richmond focus. New cast additions include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, and Faye Marsay, bringing a fresh dynamic to the beloved series.
Apple TV+ has teased that this season will be Ted's 'biggest challenge yet', with themes centred on risk-taking, growth, and personal transformation. The show aims to blend familiar faces with new energy, promising a refreshing update to the Ted Lasso universe.
These changes explain why Dunster's Jamie Tartt and other original cast members may not feature as prominently, as the story explores women's football and new personal journeys under Ted's leadership.
