What a year! Our gallery featuring the 100 best photos of 2017 kicks off with Barack Obama shedding a tear and ends with his successor inflaming the Middle East by declaring that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. In between these two bookends, we see Theresa May's government going from strong and stable to weak and wobbly, and the quashing of popular rebellions in Venezuela and Catalonia.

Islamic State's grip on Iraq and Syria grew increasingly weak throughout the year, but they were happy to claim responsibility for terror attacks in London and Manchester. The Grenfell Tower disaster revealed decades of neglect and vast chasms in British society. A military crackdown in Myanmar led to a mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims.

Climate change wreaked havoc across the world, with Portugal's deadliest forest fire season, unprecedented volumes of rain in Japan, and a series of hurricanes that ravaged the Caribbean and US. And then there was Charlottesville. And North Korea. And the Las Vegas shooting. No wonder Obama was in tears.
