Burmese TikTok star found dead in a Thailand forest

The digital world is mourning the loss of a vibrant voice following a grim discovery in Thailand's dense forests. Burmese TikTok star Ko Tin Zaw Htwe, a young creator known for his infectious energy and LGBTQ+ advocacy, has become the latest high-profile social media figure to meet a tragic and violent end.
The 25-year-old content creator was found beaten to death in a grassy area, with a blood-stained stick nearby. A suspect has been arrested, but the investigation is ongoing.
Who Was Ko Tin Zaw Htwe
Ko Tin Zaw Htwe was a social media personality who gained significant traction on TikTok for his lifestyle content and personality-driven clips. He was amongst the few openly queer creators from Myanmar, popularly known online as Irrawaddy or Ayarwaddy, with nearly one million followers on TikTok, according to the Daily Mail.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he served as a symbol of self-expression, particularly for those navigating the country's turbulent political and social landscape. His digital presence was defined by a blend of humour and resilience, earning him a dedicated following across South East Asia. Friends and collaborators described him as a light-hearted individual who used his platform to connect with others facing similar struggles.
Tributes poured onto social media following his tragic passing. According to one of his friends in a Facebook post, they were very close before Htwe became an internet celebrity. He was working at a coffee shop in Yangon and would sneak snacks to share with his friend. 'I am so incredibly heartbroken, Htwe. I believe you are in a better place now. May you never encounter such a tragic fate again in any of your future lives,' Htwe's friend wrote.

Grim Discovery in Thailand's Mae Sot Forest
The search for the influencer ended in tragedy when his body was discovered in a forest in Mae Sot, Thailand, a town situated directly on the border with Myanmar. Reports indicate that Htwe was found with severe injuries and dried blood on his face, suggesting he was beaten to death before his body was abandoned in the secluded area. A blood-stained wooden stick was found nearby, believed to be the murder weapon, according to Thai publication Thairath.
Local authorities in Thailand quickly launched a murder investigation, leading to the arrest of at least one suspect believed to be involved in the fatal assault. While the specific motive remains under investigation, the brutal nature of the crime has sparked outrage amongst human rights activists and the LGBTQ+ community.
Htwe reportedly received a call in the middle of the night on 18 January, left home, but never returned. His last post on TikTok was shared on 19 January, where he showed off a Thailand-style polo with elephant print.

Rising Deaths Amongst Content Creators
The death of Ko Tin Zaw Htwe adds to a concerning list of young influencers whose lives have been cut short in recent years. Amongst those recently mourned is Mary Magdalene, an Instagram model known for her extreme cosmetic procedures, who passed away following health complications. Similarly, the community was rocked by the loss of Indonesian influencer Lula Lahfah, another digital creator whose sudden death left fans searching for answers.
The financial pressures and safety risks associated with digital fame continue to be a point of discussion for industry experts. For many creators, the pursuit of visibility often comes with physical and mental tolls that are rarely captured in a 15-second video. As the investigation into Ko Tin Zaw Htwe's murder continues, his followers remain hopeful that justice will be served for the beloved Burmese star.
