The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards airs live tonight from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. In a marked shift from tradition, the VMAs airs on Monday night this year. The schedule change started last year. In the past, it has been the norm for the MTV VMAs to air on Sunday nights.

Award shows like the Emmys, when aired on Mondays instead of Sundays, have had a higher rating, according to Variety.

2019 MTV VMAs new location and time

The MTV VMAs are typically held in either Radio City Music Hall in New York City or Los Angeles. The annual award show has also been staged in Miami and Las Vegas. Last year, the MTV VMAs went back to its original location in New York City. But, this is the first time that the MTV VMAs will be broadcast live from the northeastern state of New Jersey. The award show will be staged at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

2019 MTV VMAs livestream channels

Tonight, you can catch the MTV VMAs live on numerous channels. MTV, MTV2, VH1, BET, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo TV, Paramount Network and TV Land will air the show live. You can even tune in directly to the MTV website to watch the livestream, Vogue reports.

Pre-show

The MTV pre-show will start an hour before the main event on Monday, at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT. Fans will have a front-row seat to performances by Ava Max, CNCO and Megan Thee Stallion at the 2019 MTV VMAs red carpet pre-show. It will be hosted by Terrence J., Nessa and Zara Larsson.

Besides that, there will be a livestream from the red carpet, at 6:30 p.m. ET by People.

2019 MTV VMAs host

This year, the show will be hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, whereas last year there was no host.

Performance line-up

Taylor Swift's opening performance is highly-awaited after the release of her seventh studio album, "Lover." A bevy of artists across genres including Lizzo, Missy Elliott, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Lil Nas X, Rosalía, A$AP Ferg, Big Sean, H.E.R., Normani and the Jonas Brothers will perform.

Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes will take their romance on stage with their performance. The pair released a new single this year titled "Señorita."

The Jonas Brothers -- Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas are set to return to the 2019 MTV VMAs after over a decade. The trio released their album "Happiness Begins" in June.

"Old Town Road (Remix)," the record-breaking song by Lil Nas X has become the longest-running No.1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The rapper's performance is being looked forward to the most.

The 2019 MTV VMAs will close with a performance by NJ natives Queen Latifah, Naughty by Nature, Redman, Fetty Wap and Wyclef Jean.
