Overview

Fresh from his runner-up finish at the recently concluded Madrid Open, Andy Murray will look to start his campaign on a winning note when he faces Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin on 11 May (Wednesday).

His split from his coach of two years, Amelie Mauresmo, has dominated recent headlines, with the player surprised by the amount of controversy it has generated. The Scot, who lost his world number two, ranking to Roger Federer post his Madrid Open loss, will need to concentrate on his game if he has to win his first-ever Rome Masters title.

World number 87 Mikhail Kukushkin has had a poor 2016 season so far; he failed to qualify for the recently concluded Madrid Open but fought back to reach the main draw at Rome. The problem for Kukushkin is that he has been injured so often that he has failed to build any rhythm in his play.

He has never beaten Murray in the past and that is not going to change as the Scot has become more comfortable on clay surfaces over time.
