The Weeknd
Bella Hadid stars in music video for boyfriend The Weeknd's new single In The Night YouTube

Sex, violence and money are aplenty in the music video for The Weeknd's new single, In The Night. The r'n'b singer mixes business with pleasure enlisting his real-life girlfriend, Bella Hadid, to star as the leading lady in the dark visuals, which were directed by BRTHR.

Running at six-and-a-half minutes, the movie-style clip features Hadid, 19, as a gogo dancer working in a seedy strip club. Interspersed with clips of The Weeknd singing in the rain and watching Hadid pole dance, the model runs into trouble and gets involved in a life of crime. It comes at the expense of The Weeknd, who is held at gunpoint by an assailant, but Hadid comes to save the day allowing the lovers to ride off into the sunset like Bonnie and Clyde.

In The Night is the latest single to be taken from The Weeknd's second studio album, Beauty Behind The Madness, which topped the US Billboard 200 chart and UK chart in August. The LP has been nominated for album of the year at the 2016 Grammys, adding to the singer's total of seven nods. The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, opened up about his relationship with Hadid in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in November and revealed their romance actually started on a professional level.

The Can't Feel My Face singer told the publication: "I actually asked her to be on the artwork for Beauty Behind The Madness. My motive was literally to work with her. I was like, 'Alright, cool – we can meet up face-to-face." Addressing the six-year age difference between the couple, The Weeknd, 25, added: "It just kind of fell into my lap. If this had happened two years ago – well she couldn't. But if I'd met someone two years ago, I probably would've f****d it up. But I'm more – how do I say it? – clear-thinking now."

The Weeknd and Hadid are not the first couple to channel their love through a music video and they will not be the last. Whether their romance lasted or flopped, IBTimes UK takes a look back at the lovebirds that came before them...

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian – Bound 2

The showbiz couple broke the internet when West unveiled the visuals for his Yeezus track, which featured a topless Kardashian canoodling with her rapper husband on a motorbike.

Beyonce and Jay Z – Drunk In Love

Music's power couple have collaborated together several times in the past but Drunk In Love might just be their most carefree music video to date with the pair knocking back the alcohol while enjoying a late night rendezvous on the beach.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck – Jenny From The Block

J.Lo set the trend when she invited her then-boyfriend and future fiance Ben Affleck to star as her leading man in the video for her hit 2002 single. The couple, known as Bennifer, broke up at the beginning of 2004 just a few months after calling off their wedding.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen – All Of Me

Legend penned the ultimate love song for his model wife in 2013 and what better tribute than to feature her in the music video for the ballad following their Italian wedding.

John Mayer and Katy Perry – Who You Love

The on-again, off-again couple tried to keep their relationship out of the spotlight but finally gave in when they collaborated on this romantic ballad. However, their romance ended yet again shortly after they promoted the single in 2013.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton – Lost Without U

They were little known stars in 2007 when Thicke released his hit single Lost Without U and blissfully in love but the married childhood sweethearts separated in February 2014 after two decades together. Their divorce was finalised in March.

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney – You And I

Although she is one of the most eccentric artists in pop, Gaga's relationship with Chicago Fire actor Kinney had been kept mostly out of the spotlight until he appeared in the music video for her 2011 single. The couple are said to have gotten engaged in February.

Enrique Iglesias and Anna Kournikova – Escape

Iglesias and the tennis star have been together for a lifetime in showbiz years. The pair began dating in 2001 and she played his love interest in the video for his 2002 single Escape. Despite reports of a break-up in 2013, the couple are still believed to be going strong.

Pink and Carey Hart – So What

The pop star got brutally honest about her split from husband Hart on her 2008 track So What but nobody expected he would actually feature in the music video. Fortunately, the couple were able to work out their differences and reconciled before going on to have daughter Willow.

Tyga and Kylie Jenner – Stimulated

The Cash Money rapper waited only a matter of days after Jenner celebrated her 18th birthday to confirm their romance with Stimulated. Hitting out at critics of the age difference, the couple are seen getting intimate and kissing in the video. Needless to say, it caused a stir with social media commentators, many of whom branded it inappropriate.

Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks – Marry Me

Fans believed the smitten couple would be tying the knot when Derulo wrote Marry Me in 2013 but, sadly, he and Sparks split in September 2014.
