In a rare case of "vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision" in the city of Burbank in Los Angeles County in Southern California, a 101 year old man was killed by a 91 year old woman driver on Tuesday.

The city police said that when their officers reached the area of Olive Avenue and Griffith Park Drive where the accident occurred, they found the elderly male, struck by a vehicle, with severe injuries in the roadway. The victim was identified as Otto Jensen, a resident of Burbank, and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the nearest hospital, according to the city police.

"Fire Department personnel began life saving efforts and transported the elderly male to Saint Joseph's Medical Center. Emergency room personnel continued life saving efforts but the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead," Burbank Police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The driver, identified as 91 year old resident Mary Beaumont, was driving a sedan. She reportedly stayed at the scene after the accident and through the investigation.

"She was subsequently released after being interviewed by Traffic Investigators from the Burbank Police Department," the police said.

While the Los Angeles County Coroner's office and the Burbank Police Department Traffic Bureau are continuing the investigation, an official expressed his grief over losing Jensen, who was also a famous photographer.

"It's truly a tragedy, not only for Otto's family but for the city, to lose such a well-known figure here in Burbank. He lived and worked here for a long time," Burbank police spokesman Darin Ryburn was quoted as saying by Reuters.
