Lewis Hamilton topped the time sheets in both the sessions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. But the Briton crashed in Free Practice 2 (FP2) when it started training, as it did in Monaco two weeks back.
The Ferrari's have come to Canada with an upgraded power unit and will be looking to close the gap with the Silver Arrows team.
The weather forecast for qualifying is similar to FP2 as it is expected to be overcast with little chance of rain.
Where to watch live
The third free practice session begins on 9 May at 3pm BST, while the qualifying session starts at 6pm BST. Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports F1 HD will provide live coverage of both events in the UK.
Real-time internet updates are available on the Live Timing section of the sport's official website.
Just like in Monaco, the FP2 was curtailed by heavy rain at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve limiting the drivers to just around 45 minutes of track time.
It was Lewis Hamilton, who was back on top of the time sheets in both sessions, but the Briton suffered a crash in the latter half of the session after Mercedes decided to send their drivers out on a wet track with intermediate tyres.
The Ferrari's, who have come to this race with an upgraded power unit, were much closer to the championship leader in the FP2 than they were in FP1. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were separated by just 0.006 seconds in second and third.
Nico Rosberg, who was second in the morning session, could only manage fourth, but the Mercedes duo will be favourites to lock out the front row yet again, with the pace displayed by Hamilton at the front.
With the track more favourable to strong power units, the Mercedes powered cars were leading with Pastor Maldonado's Lotus occupying the fourth place ahead of Valterri Bottas' Williams.
The fastest Renault powered car was that of Daniil Kvyat in the ninth place, signalling a tough race for the Renault and McLaren-Honda powered cars.
