A ship shaped like a plane caused a worldwide crash scare weeks after a Malaysia Airlines flight went missing in Southeast Asia.

A Boeing 737 was said to have crashed into the sea off the off Spain's Canary Islands.

Minutes after the breaking news was published by prominent media outlets across the globe the report was debunked.

It turned out that a photo purportedly depicting the plane crash landing that had been circulating on twitter in fact depicted a vessel carrying a cargo shaped like a plane.

The shape had reportedly also misled the Canary Islands' emergency services that mistook it for a crashed aircraft.
