'Sold Out': Senate Candidate Charles Booker Blasts Mitch McConnell and Alleges Rampant Corruption

McConnell announced last year he would not seek re-election, ending a more than four-decade grip on the seat. Booker, who secured the Democratic nomination in May, now faces Republican Congressman Andy Barr in a race that has drawn national attention.

The Louisville progressive has run statewide before, a spirited 2020 Senate primary and a 2022 general election loss to Rand Paul and says this bid is about standing up to what he calls entrenched corruption.

Corruption Claims and Mcconnell's Legacy

Booker did not mince words in recent interviews, describing Kentucky as one of the poorest and sickest states in the country. 'We all wanted to drain the swamp. We need to drain the swamp. And in a lot of ways, Mitch McConnell helped to create it,' he said.

The message has been a staple on the trail. At a Franklin County rally this weekend, Booker framed the next few months as a 'full court press' against the status quo McConnell built.

'If you're tired of the status quo that Mitch McConnell has built, this campaign is for you,' he told supporters, adding that his pitch is about affordability and standing up for Kentucky rather than powerful figures like Elon Musk.

At the Fancy Farm picnic in early August, Booker told Democrats he is running to protect families from 'corrupt politicians in Washington who don't care whether we live or die.' The blunt rhetoric is emblematic of a campaign defined by a direct challenge to the old guard, wrapped in a promise to fight for working people.

McConnell, 84, has not appeared in public since being hospitalised on 14 June following a fall, and his office remained largely silent for several weeks before confirming the details in mid-July. Booker has pressed for transparency, arguing constituents deserve direct communication from their senator regardless of format.

He said he does not believe Republican leaders who say they have spoken with McConnell by phone. 'In an age where every time we turn on the news, there's lies... no, I do not believe them,' Booker said.

Website Disruption as Race Heats Up

As Booker sharpened his attacks on McConnell, his campaign disclosed a 'concerning disruption' to its server that impacted the official website and email systems.

A campaign spokesperson said that the IT team had engaged officials, service providers and technology partners to secure and restore systems, and that further comment would wait until a thorough assessment was complete.

The disruption forced a switch from charlesbooker.org, a domain Booker had used since at least 2021, to a newly registered address, charlesbookerky.org. Public registration data shows the old domain recently returned an error message.

The campaign said it would redirect visitors from the old site soon, but the changeover risks confusing voters with the November election approaching.

Social media accounts now point to the new site, yet many top Google results still surface the former address. A Bing search for Charles Booker returned the old campaign site first, with the new one further down the page. It is a messy situation, and one that could matter in a tight race.

Barr, who has held his congressional seat since 2013, enjoys a significant fundraising edge, outpacing Booker by nearly $2 million (£1.48 million) in cash on hand at the end of June. At the Louisville GOP dinner this week, Barr warned against complacency while taking jabs at Booker and framing the contest as a battle against socialism.

Booker, for his part, has leaned into a progressive platform that includes Medicare for All and an end to what he calls endless wars, arguing Kentucky is winnable for a progressive in 2026.

He has also said he supports term limits, framing the debate around capacity rather than age. 'That's what's called into question with Mitch McConnell's health because he has been struggling with his health for some time,' Booker explained.

The Booker campaign has not confirmed the exact cause of the server disruption, and the status of the campaign's former domain could not be independently verified.
