Manchester United and Chelsea have suffered a set-back in their battle to sign Edinson Cavani after his agent claimed that the Paris Saint-Germain striker is likely to stay in The Ligue 1 Champions next season.

Laurent Blanc's side signed Cavani last July after paying Napoli £55m to secure his services.

Recent reports suggested he was likely to move away, as he felt overshadowed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic because he was unhappy about having to play in the wing rather than his preferred position up top.

Nevertheless, Cavani's agent Claudio Anellucci has dismissed recent speculations about his future in an interview with Radio CRC by claiming that the player wants to stay at PSG.

He said: "Cavani will stay in Paris and there is no signal to think the opposite."

Asked if Cavani would be tempted to move away, with Juventus also interested in acquiring his services, Anellucci said: "These are only fantasies."

Cavani's agent also said he believes that PSG is the best place for the player as the Ligue 1 champions' future plans are very ambitious.

Anellucci said: "PSG want to get ahead in the Champions League and also are in a good form in the league. I do not know if PSG are going to win the Champions League because for that you also need some luck. Anyway, I believe that the president is doing everything to improve the team."

After signing Nemanja Matic, Mohamed Salah and Kurt Zouma during the latest January transfer window, Chelsea's main target for the summer is to sign a top-scorer. However, after Cavani's agent quotes it looks that Jose Mourinho will have to look somewhere else for his target, with Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa and Jackson Martinez also tipped to be on the Portuguese boss's shopping list.

Meanwhile, despite Wayne Rooney's recent renewal, United are also keen on signing a striker after Robin van Persie has missed many games this season with injuries.

Reports earlier this year claimed that Moyes's main target was Cavani, as he was spotted in France watching him at the Stade Chaban-Delmas during a Coupe de la Ligue game.
