David Ferrer takes on Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinal of the 2014 Mutua Madrid Open at the Estadio Manolo Santana, Spain, on Friday.

Overview

Ferrer cruised into the last-eight of the 2014 Madrid Masters after registering his fifth victory in six meetings against John Isner in the third round. The 32-year-old Spaniard dispatched the world no 10, 6-4, 6-4, needing less than 78 minutes.

The world no 6, required three sets in the second round to beat his compatriot and wildcard entrant Albert Ramos, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-3, last Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Ferrer's quarterfinal opponent Gulbis progressed after comfortably beating 25-year-old Marin Cilic in straight sets. The Latvian took 87 minutes to oust his Croatian counterpart, 6-3, 6-4.

Gulbis has so far dropped only one set in the competition which came against Jerzy Janowicz in the first round. After overcoming the 23-year-old Pole, the 25-year-old defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round.

The winner between Ferrer and Gulbis will face the winner between Feliciano Lopez and Kei Nishikori in the semi-final on Saturday.
