The lawyer of three men accused of gang raping and murdering a 23-year-old student in Delhi has said that police tortured his clients in to providing a confession.

Defence lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma has said that thew five suspects, who under heavy security appeared in court for the second time today, were beaten and sexually assaulted by police, who also put them in cells with other inmates to be threatened and frightened.

Delhi police refused to comment on the allegations. Last week, prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said the victim's blood was found on the clothes of all the accused.

The case has been adjourned until Monday, where judges are expected to move the trial to a special fast-track court.

If convicted, the five men charged face the death penalty. The sixth suspect claims to be 17, and if this confirmed then he will be tried separately in a youth court where he will face a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
