Why $16bn in Federal Funding Was Halted Amid Reports Trump Wanted His Name on Key US Transport Hubs AFP News

Some new allegations have come out surrounding President Donald Trump, especially that he sought to attach his name to big transport hubs in exchange for releasing frozen infrastructure funding. This has started a new political back-and-forth in the United States.

According to reports, Trump offered to release billions of dollars in federal funds earmarked for the Gateway Hudson River rail tunnel project if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer backed renaming both New York's Penn Station and Washington's Dulles International Airport after him.

It also seems that the funding in question is crucial to a long-delayed rail and tunnel project that connects New York and New Jersey, and its suspension has already prompted legal action by the two states against the federal government. While the suggestion of renaming iconic transport infrastructure has been flatly rejected by Democrats, including Senator Schumer, the episode shows the ongoing battle over federal spending, political legacy, and infrastructure priorities. All that mixed with a bunch of egoes.

Is Donald Trump Really Withholding Funding?

As per new reports, a massive package of federal funds has been held up for months. The $16 billion (£11.8 billion GBP approx) relates mainly to the Gateway Program, a multibillion-dollar initiative to build and upgrade rail tunnels under the Hudson River serving the Northeast Corridor. Trump's administration reportedly froze the money late last year during a protracted federal government shutdown, citing many worries, including compliance reviews and questions about procedural practices on the project.

Now, new reports allege that in January 2026, the President offered to unfreeze that funding if Senator Chuck Schumer would back changing the names of two major transport hubs, namely, New York's Penn Station and Washington's Dulles International Airport, to bear Trump's name. This was described by sources familiar with the discussions, though Schumer quickly rejected the idea, telling Trump he lacked the authority to make such changes.

Moreover, the hold-up of the funds has bigger implications. New York and New Jersey have now filed a lawsuit against the federal government to compel the release of the money, arguing the freeze is unlawful and jeopardises employment and construction schedules for critical infrastructure. Without the funds, construction work could come to a halt and delay a project intended to strengthen a vital rail link in the busiest passenger corridor in the United States.

Furthermore, responses to the proposal have been polarised. Many Democratic lawmakers have criticised the idea of conditioning infrastructure money on personal naming rights, calling it inappropriate and a distraction from national needs. Some Republican colleagues have even introduced legislation to rename airports after Trump, though such efforts have not advanced a lot.

Other Current Trump Controversies

President Trump's leadership has many times intersected with contentious issues that have dominated US political discourse. One ongoing area of controversy involves immigration policy and enforcement, particularly operations led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security. Many argue these efforts go too far and create humanitarian problems, while supporters say they are necessary for national security.

Additionally, the way Trump's name and legacy are being handled in public institutions has always been a bit of a controversy. In late 2025, for example, his name was affixed to the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts and the US Institute of Peace, steps that were met with both praise and backlash.
