A dramatic late night rescue happened in North Wales after the Carrier cargo ship ruptured and then ran aground in high winds and rough seas.

In the footage shown here the high risk rescue was fraught with danger as one of the rescue helicopter's winch broke midway through the operation. Luckily when five of the crew were off the ship and then the Rescue co-ordinators had to dispatch a second helicopter to collect the remaining two crew members.

The ship is in one piece after hitting a rock in rough seas near a quarry jetty at Llanddulas, near Colwyn Bay, but has not yet been secured. The vessel was carrying 40.000 litres of fuel and there are concerns the fuel may leak into the sea, and with this in mind Salvage and pollution experts are on their way to assess the damage.
