On 23 July 2025, the families of the 'Idaho 4' - the four slain University of Idaho students, delivered emotional victim impact statements during Bryan Kohberger's sentencing. The convicted murderer was sentenced to four life terms without parole and 10 additional years for burglary.

The hearing at Latah County Courthouse offered a rare, heartfelt glimpse into the lives of the victims, remembered as kind, ambitious, and deeply loved.

Kaylee Goncalves Remembered During Sentencing

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, was a general studies student from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Her sister, Alivea Goncalves, addressed the court directly, calling Kohberger a 'pathetic sociopath' and stating, 'You took away someone who would have shown you compassion. But you picked the wrong family. We will never stop fighting for her.'

Following the hearing, Alivea told NBC affiliate KTVB of Boise that Kohberger was 'a coward' who had 'been protected by the court since day one', adding, 'his days of being protected are coming to an end.'

Kaylee was remembered by her family as loyal, compassionate and full of light.

Family Tribute to Madison Mogen in Court

Madison 'Maddie' Mogen, 21, was studying marketing and shared a deep bond with Kaylee Goncalves, her best friend from the same hometown. During sentencing, her grandmother, Kim Cheeley, described Maddie as 'a beacon of joy' and spoke of the lasting trauma her murder caused.

In a victim impact statement captured by Court TV, Maddie's father tearfully said, 'I love you, Maddie, wish you were still here.'

The two women were found together at the crime scene, a testament to their inseparable connection.

Xana Kernodle's Father Speaks at Hearing

Xana Kernodle, 20, was remembered by her father as a vibrant force who kept the family grounded with her calls and care. Fighting back tears, he recalled almost visiting her that night — a decision that haunts him still.

Her sister, Jazzmin, described Xana as kind, funny, and full of radiant energy. Though younger, Xana had been her guide. 'Her story doesn't end with what was taken,' she said. 'Her light still shines, and her voice will echo louder than this pain.'

Ethan Chapin's Legacy Shared by Loved Ones

Ethan Chapin, 20, was studying recreation and tourism management and was the only male victim, as well as Xana Kernodle's boyfriend. Though the Chapin family did not attend the sentencing, a statement was read in court describing Ethan as 'light-hearted, joyful, and grounded in love.' His death, they said, left 'an unfillable space.'

In a separate interview with NBC News, Ethan's parents shared that accepting the plea deal brought some closure and spoke about their ongoing efforts to honour his legacy.

Survivor Statements and Judge's Remarks in Kohberger Case

Dylan Mortensen, one of the surviving roommates, addressed the court in a written statement, questioning why she survived. Bethany Funke, the second surviving roommate, submitted her own tribute describing the victims as 'full of life and laughter.'

Judge Steven Hippler called Kohberger a 'faceless coward' and acknowledged the immense grief endured by the families. Though Kohberger offered no apology or motive during sentencing, both survivors and the victims' families used the hearing to share personal tributes and speak directly about their loss.
