Grimes advised Instagram followers to remain vigilant over cybersecurity threats but provided no evidence that a coordinated cyberattack was imminent By Daniel Oberhaus/Wikimedia Commons

Grimes has urged her Instagram followers to remain vigilant over cybersecurity threats in the coming days and weeks, warning against ignoring what she described as a possible 'warning shot'.

Her message accompanied a repost grouping alleged security incidents under the label 'Black October'. Among the developments cited was a breach at Railway, a cloud hosting platform for developers, which disclosed unauthorised access and potential exposure of sensitive credentials on 21 October.

The Canadian musician, who shares three children with Elon Musk, provided no evidence of an impending attack. No confirmed connection has been established between the incidents she highlighted.

Grimes' 'Warning Shot' Remains Unexplained

'I have been trying to warn folks abt this for a long time,' she wrote in an Instagram Story. Her longer warning combined uncertainty about online claims with a prediction that another incident would follow.

'Hard to tell what's real, but if the 'warning shot' wasn't the last break in containment, and if it's not this, it will be something soon, and it is a mistake to look away,' she continued.

Grimes did not explain what she meant by a 'break in containment', identify a suspected attacker or name an expected target. She also suggested that someone might request the removal of her message, without identifying whom she meant.

'I don't know they probably make me delete this shortly,' she wrote. 'But I would be vigilant in coming days/weeks.'

The Claims Behind Grimes' Repost

The compilation, shared by social media user @BalaiBB, claimed that more than 27 major cybersecurity incidents had occurred within 48 hours. That total and timeframe remain unverified, as does any suggestion that a single group coordinated the events.

Its list included vulnerabilities affecting PHP and Node.js, concerns involving Java and the reported Railway compromise. It also mentioned GitLab, an alleged exposure of API keys and a vulnerability involving Signal.

Those descriptions cover different kinds of security concerns. A newly disclosed software vulnerability is not evidence that an attacker has successfully exploited it. Nor does the identification of a flaw necessarily mean that users' information has been stolen.

Railway's security disclosure concerns an incident involving unauthorised access. Its inclusion alongside software flaws does not establish that the other entries describe comparable breaches or belong to the same sequence of events.

Security researchers have identified serious vulnerabilities in software employed to build and operate websites and applications. Compromised software packages can also allow attackers to distribute malicious code through trusted development tools.

Updating software, protecting credentials and monitoring for suspicious activity are practical responses to the documented risks. Those precautions do not depend on whether the individual incidents are connected.

Grimes' Technology Interests And The AI Question

Her warning coincided with wider concerns about artificial intelligence in cyberattacks, although Grimes did not specify whether she meant cybersecurity, AI or a broader technological threat.

The musician has a longstanding interest in artificial intelligence and has incorporated emerging technology into her music and public commentary. Musk's businesses include the AI company xAI.

Microsoft has reported that a China-linked hacking group employed AI-powered tools in a campaign targeting organisations around the world. Its findings highlighted how automated systems can support efforts to identify weaknesses and accelerate parts of an operation.

Grimes did not explicitly connect her Instagram warning to Microsoft's findings, and no verified link between the two has been established.
