A killer who brutally murdered his partner left police officers stunned when his primary concern upon arrest wasn't the life he had just taken but the release of a video game. In a bizarre and chilling twist, 35-year-old Robert Richens was captured on body-worn video sobbing about his inability to play the upcoming 'Grand Theft Auto VI' while being detained for the murder of Rachael Vaughan.

The harrowing case, which concluded at Oxford Crown Court this week, exposed the disturbing priorities of a man who had just left his girlfriend dead in her own home. While the 40-year-old victim lay lifeless, Richens was filmed yelping through tears about missing out on the latest instalment of the blockbuster franchise.

A Chilling 999 Confession

The chain of events began on 30 May last year, when Richens dialled 999 to report his own crime. The audio recording of the call, played during court proceedings, captured his frantic admission to the emergency operator. 'You're not going to believe this. I think I accidentally killed someone', he stated.

Moments later, Richens attempted to frame his confession as an act of conscience, despite having failed to seek help for Ms Vaughan earlier. 'I am being honest because I am ashamed of what I have done', he told the operator, his voice breaking as he began sobbing. Police were immediately dispatched to the address in Oxford, where they found the devastating scene.

Prioritising 'GTA 6' Over Freedom

Officers arrived to find Rachael Vaughan, 40, dead inside the property. Despite the emergency services' best efforts, they pronounced her dead at the scene. It was during his subsequent transport to the police station that Richens' behaviour took a surreal turn.

Footage released by Thames Valley Police shows Richens in the back of a police vehicle, crying uncontrollably. Amidst his wails, he blurts out, 'I'm going to miss GTA and that'. The officer, seemingly confused by the non-sequitur during a murder arrest, asks which version of Grand Theft Auto he was referring to. Richens confirms it is 'GTA 6'.

In a stark reality check, the officer informs him he has 'ages' until the game, which is due to be released in November, comes out. The realisation of his situation then seems to hit Richens fully. He wails, 'Ah, I am going to get life'.

Life Behind Bars for 'Merciless' Attack

Richens was charged later that day, and the judicial process moved swiftly. In December last year, Richens pleaded guilty to one count of murder at a previous hearing. He appeared at Oxford Crown Court this week to receive his sentence for the senseless crime that cut Rachael's life short.

Richens received a life sentence for Rachael's murder, with the judge ordering he serve at least 16 years and one month. This means he will be in prison long after the launch of the video game he was so worried about, serving as a grim reminder of the finality of his actions.

Detective Blasts Richens' Failure to Act

Following the sentencing, Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart May issued a statement condemning Richens' conduct. He emphasised the tragedy of Rachael's death in what should have been her haven.

'My thoughts remain with Rachael Vaughan's family and with everyone who loved her as they continue to face what is an unimaginable loss,' DCI May said. 'Rachael was taken from them in the very place she should have felt safest – her own home.'

The Detective Chief Inspector did not mince words regarding the killer's behaviour after the attack. 'Robert Richens' actions were heartless', he stated. 'He left Rachael alone in her house, made no attempt to help her or seek medical attention, and he only contacted police when he had nowhere else to turn.'

The case has garnered significant attention, not only for the tragedy of Ms Vaughan's death but also for the killer's bizarre lament caught on camera. DCI May concluded, 'Today's sentence means that Richens will now face the consequences of his merciless actions'.
