Australian HYROX athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has apologised after continuing to compete during a race in Beijing despite suffering sudden bowel incontinence. The incident, which was captured on video and spread widely online, sparked intense criticism over health, hygiene and the decision to remain on the course.

Wietrzyk initially finished first in her division, but she has now retroactively withdrawn from the event and forfeited the ranking points she earned. Her apology also comes as the controversy has reportedly affected her relationship with major sponsor Puma.

The athlete subsequently announced that she would withdraw from the Beijing race retrospectively and give up the points she earned from her finish.

Puma has reportedly removed her branded clothing range and references to her from parts of its online store, although some promotional material remains visible on social media.
