Just-Released Political Prisoner Juan Pablo Guanipa Kidnapped by Armed Men, Machado Posts
Machado posted about the development on X

Venezuelan opposition politician Juan Pablo Guanipa, freshly released from prison as part of a broader amnesty deal, was kidnapped by armed men in Caracas on Sunday, according to a post by prominent opposition leader María Corina Machado. The incident, occurring mere hours after his liberation, has sparked renewed fears of political repression under the Maduro regime and raised urgent international concern about his safety.
Machado's urgent alert on X detailed how heavily armed individuals in civilian attire arrived in four vehicles and forcibly took Guanipa from the Los Chorros neighbourhood, demanding his immediate release. His son Ramón later described the abduction as an ambush by around ten unidentified gunmen, emphasising that it happened shortly before midnight, only hours after the politician had addressed supporters and the media following his freedom.
Guanipa, a key ally of Machado and former opposition lawmaker, had been detained since May 2025 on unsubstantiated charges of plotting 'terror' activities and conspiring against the government — accusations widely rejected by his supporters as politically motivated. His release was celebrated by the opposition on Sunday before the violent seizure was reported, leaving many in shock.
The Prisoner Release Deal
His release was part of a wave that saw at least 30 political prisoners freed, as confirmed by human rights group Foro Penal. The amnesty, announced by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, aims to release all such detainees by 13 February, framed as a step towards national reconciliation. However, the government insists these individuals were convicted of crimes, not political offences
The freed cohort included lawyer Perkins Rocha, Popular Will party member Luis Somaza and activist Jesus Armas, among others, in what was seen as a response to mounting international pressure — particularly from the United States — to improve Venezuela's human rights record. These releases come amid a broader political transition following the controversial removal of former President Nicolas Maduro from power and efforts to reset ties with Washington.

International Alert
A few minutes ago, Juan Pablo Guanipa was kidnapped in the Los Chorros neighborhood of Caracas.
Heavily armed men dressed in civilian clothes arrived in four vehicles and took him away by force.
We demand his immediate release.
Opposition Alarm and Global Reaction
Machado's urgent alert quickly drew global attention. In her bilingual X post, she described the kidnappers' violent arrival and wrote that Guanipa had been taken 'by force,' calling for immediate proof of life and urging international intervention. Thousands of responses poured in from users tagging US political figures and human rights advocates, with calls for urgent action against what was described by many as the 'narco-dictatorship.'
Machado's message underscores the opposition's desperation, portraying the abduction as a direct challenge to recent diplomatic gains. Guanipa's son, Ramon, also recorded a video of himself making the same claim, which was posted on his father's X account.

Broader Implications for Venezuela
This kidnapping casts a shadow over the fragile amnesty process, raising doubts about the regime's commitment to reform and threatening to derail cautious optimism about the country's democratic transition. Opposition figures fear it signals intensified targeting of dissidents even after formal release, suggesting that legal freedom may not equate to personal security
Human rights advocates are now calling for international monitoring to prevent further abuses and ensure the safe return of Guanipa and others who have been released only to face renewed danger. As Venezuela grapples with political turmoil, his fate remains unknown, amplifying calls for his safe return and underscoring the perilous path to democracy in a nation long plagued by repression, with the world watching closely.
