Donald Trump Says 'My Wife Is Here' Then Corrects Himself as Melania Skips His Ireland Trip

President Donald Trump said 'My wife is here' during remarks in Dublin on Saturday, 12 September, before immediately adding that first lady Melania Trump was there 'in spirit.' Melania did not accompany him on the Ireland trip, and Trump recounted her joking that the journey was 'a seven-hour trip.'

The exchange came one day after Melania appeared alongside Trump at the Pentagon for events marking the 25th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks. Earlier in the week, she also did not attend Trump's Republican midterm convention appearances in Dallas on 9 and 10 September.

Donald Trump Says Melania Is 'Here in Spirit'

Trump made the comments while addressing US Embassy personnel and business leaders at Deerfield, the US ambassador's official residence in Dublin.

'My wife is here,' Trump said, before adding, 'My wife is here in spirit.' He continued: 'She's watching right now.'

Trump said Melania had asked him to 'say hello' because she was 'very friendly with these two people.' He did not clearly identify whom he meant by 'these two people' in that passage.

The president then recounted asking Melania to come with him on the trip.

'I said, 'Well, why don't you come with me?'' Trump said. He quoted her as replying, 'Well, it's a seven-hour trip. Maybe I'm not that friendly.'

The remark drew laughter from the audience. Trump's comments did not suggest any dispute between him and the first lady, and his account presented the length of the journey as the reason she gave for not joining him.

During the Ireland visit, Trump met Taoiseach Micheál Martin and President Catherine Connolly. He was also hosted at Deerfield by US Ambassador Edward S. Walsh and Walsh's wife, Lynn.

Melania Trump Maintains Washington Schedule

While Trump was in Dallas on 9 September, Melania addressed participants in the White House Historical Association's Presidential Sites Summit during a reception at the White House.

The summit, held from 8 to 10 September, brought together representatives from presidential sites and related institutions to discuss historic preservation, collaboration and the continuing relevance of those sites.

In her remarks, Melania focused on design, stewardship and her work on the White House Tennis Pavilion.

'Great design transcends aesthetic appeal; it shapes our lived experiences,' she said, adding that this philosophy guided her approach to the pavilion.

Melania said the project was developed with the Trust for the National Mall, the Executive Residence and the National Park Service. She also said it received approvals in 2018 from the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission.

'Every detail was thoughtfully considered to ensure the new structure harmonized with the historic neoclassical character of the White House Grounds,' she said.

She later framed preservation as an obligation to future generations.

'It is our duty to ensure that the choices we make today are worthy of the legacy we pass forward,' Melania said.

The first lady also shared clips from the remarks on X, keeping her public messaging focused on architecture, preservation and stewardship.

Melania appeared with Trump the following day, Friday, 11 September, at the Pentagon for ceremonies marking 25 years since the 2001 attacks. Trump departed for Ireland later that night without her.

Taken together, the appearances show that Melania maintained a separate public schedule in Washington during parts of Trump's travel. In his Dublin remarks, Trump offered no suggestion of a private disagreement and instead recounted her comment about the length of the trip.
