For the past 15 years, Kim Jong Un has been the undisputed face of North Korea. However, a new figure is sharing the stage with increasing frequency. South Korea's spy agency has told lawmakers that Kim Jong Un has selected his teenage daughter as his heir. This move signals a significant step towards extending the family dynasty to a fourth generation, despite the country's deeply male-dominated culture.

A Shift to Successor Designation

On Thursday, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea informed lawmakers that Kim Ju Ae is no longer just being 'trained' but has entered the stage of 'successor designation'. Lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen told reporters that the agency made this assessment after looking at her growing presence at official events. She has been seen voicing her opinion on state policies and attending high-profile military anniversaries.

The NIS noted that the way North Korean state media portrays her has changed. She is now referred to with titles such as 'great person of guidance' or 'hyangdo'. In North Korean propaganda, this term is usually reserved only for top leaders and their chosen successors. This change suggests that the regime is working hard to build a narrative that justifies her future rule.

Who Is Kim Ju Ae and How Old Is She?

Kim Ju Ae is believed to be about 13 years old. She is the only publicly known child of Kim Jong Un and his wife, Ri Sol Ju. While the NIS believes Kim Jong Un may have an older son, he has never been shown to the public or acknowledged by state media.

The world first learned of Ju Ae's existence through an unlikely source. Former American basketball player Dennis Rodman visited the secretive state in 2013 and revealed to the press that he had 'held baby Ju Ae'. Based on this timeline, intelligence officials believe she was born around 2013. Despite her young age, she is now the most visible symbol of the regime's future.

Breaking Tradition in a Male-Dominated Society

The rise of Kim Ju Ae raises a major question: Will North Korea's male-dominated culture accept a female leader? Since the country was founded in 1948, it has been ruled by three generations of men from the Kim family. If Ju Ae succeeds her father, she would be the first female leader in the country's history.

Some experts previously doubted that a woman could lead the military-focused state. However, the 'Paektu bloodline'—the direct lineage of the Kim family—seems to be more important than gender. Analysts suggest that Kim Jong Un is positioning her early to ensure the public and the military elite get used to the idea. It is similar to how monarchies operate, where the bloodline ensures legitimacy, regardless of whether the heir is male or female.

From Missile Launches to Diplomatic Summits

Ju Ae made her first public appearance in November 2022. She was pictured holding her father's hand while inspecting a massive intercontinental ballistic missile. Since then, she has accompanied him to military parades, factory openings, and even a visit to Beijing in September. This trip to China was her first known travel abroad and was seen as an effort to introduce her to North Korea's most important ally.

The NIS is also watching closely to see if she will attend the upcoming Workers' Party congress. This major political event happens once every five years. If she takes a central role there, it will confirm that the regime is serious about her status as the next leader.

Why the Rush for a Young Successor?

Kim Jong Un was named heir in 2010 when he was 26 years old, only two years before his father died. He had little time to prepare. Analysts believe he wants to give his daughter a longer runway to learn the job. By starting her public life early, he hopes to secure the dynasty's future long before his own health or power begins to fade.
