Kim Jong-un and Kim Jong-ae's Touchy-Feely Bond Exposed Weeks Before Succession Talk
Analysts revisited earlier appearances as leadership succession announced

Kim Jong-un's bond with his daughter Kim Ju-ae has come under fresh scrutiny as questions grow over North Korea's future leadership. The closely watched interactions between Kim Jong-un and Kim Ju-ae have again stirred speculation, just weeks before key political gatherings where succession talk could intensify.
A report from Tokyo-based outlet Daily NK Japan described a recent public display of affection between the pair as 'unusual', pointing to footage from a New Year's performance in Pyongyang.
Observers said the leader and his daughter appeared unusually close, fuelling debate over whether the appearances reflect a carefully staged succession narrative or something deeper within the secretive regime.
The episode has drawn renewed attention as South Korea's intelligence agency recently told lawmakers that Kim Ju-ae, believed to be around 13, has likely entered the stage of formal successor designation. Her increasingly visible presence at high-profile state events has prompted analysts to reassess the leadership dynamics inside Pyongyang.
Unusual Public Affection Sparks Debate
At the New Year's celebration broadcast by state television, Kim Ju-ae was seated between Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju. The report, translated by Korea JoongAng, says that throughout the performance, she was seen holding her father's hand and whispering to him, openly displaying their closeness.
The pair 'engaged in what could be described as excessive physical contact throughout the event', with some officials reportedly appearing uncomfortable or avoiding eye contact.
The report highlighted a moment during the countdown to 2026, when Kim Ju-ae stood up, placed her hand on her father's face and kissed him on the cheek. Kim Jong-un responded with a broad smile.

The outlet noted this was not the first time their interactions had drawn comment. At a hotel completion ceremony in December, the pair reportedly stood unusually close 'like a couple', prompting negative reactions among some North Korean observers who described the scene as 'disgusting' and 'beyond a normal father-daughter relationship'.
The report concluded that such behaviour 'appears to go beyond a rational attempt to stage a succession narrative, instead reflecting distortions and anxieties inherent in the North Korean system itself'.
Succession Signals Grow Clearer
The renewed scrutiny comes as South Korea's National Intelligence Service told lawmakers that Kim Ju-ae has likely been designated as her father's successor.
Lawmaker Lee Seong-kwen said the agency based its assessment on 'a range of circumstances', including her growing presence at major state events and indications she has begun voicing opinions on certain policies.
Ju-ae has appeared at the founding anniversary of the Korean People's Army, at visits to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, and during inspections of weapons systems. Analysts say these appearances are consistent with early-stage grooming for leadership in North Korea's hereditary political system.
The intelligence agency is also closely watching whether she attends the upcoming Workers' Party congress, the regime's largest political event, which sets national priorities for the next five years.
Kim Ju-ae is the only publicly acknowledged child of Kim Jong-un and Ri Sol-ju. South Korean officials believe the leader may have an older son, but he has never been shown in state media.
Her existence first became public through former NBA player Dennis Rodman, who said in 2013 that he had 'held baby Ju-ae' during a visit to the country. She made her first official appearance on state television in 2022, inspecting an intercontinental ballistic missile alongside her father.
Whether the latest displays of affection are genuine family moments or carefully orchestrated political signals remains unclear. But with succession talk intensifying, every gesture between Kim Jong-un and his daughter is now being examined for what it might reveal about North Korea's future leadership.
