Kolkata Knight Riders and Rising Pune Supergiants, two teams with differing fortunes in the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), face off in match 45 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 14 May (Saturday). The Knight Riders have played some solid cricket so far and are currently ranked fourth on the points table.

The Kolkata outfit has always had a solid base in terms of players retained. They tend to stick with players who have performed for them in the past and the move has worked for them this season too. The core group of players have all performed at crucial times, with skipper Gautam Gambhir and Andre Russell standing out with the bat and ball respectively. With four games to go, they know that winning all of them will help them qualify for the play-off stage.

New franchise Rising Pune Supergiants have struggled so far in the competition, finding themselves in the bottom spot after winning just 3 games out of 11 played. Yes, they have been unlucky with injuries to key foreign players but the remaining players have failed to perform to their potential.

R Ashwin, in particular, has been disappointing, taking just four wickets in 11 games at an average of 58. Apart from Ajinkya Rahane and to an extent skipper MS Dhoni, they have had a disappointing start to their maiden appearance in the competition. The team management will now need to start planning for next year as chances of them qualifying for the play-offs are all but extinguished.
