Two women who were thrown out of a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, United States, for having sex in the restaurant's bathrooms were assaulted by an angry mob as they made to leave.

Customers at the McDonald's outlet reported the women to the manager shortly before 5pm local time. The two were getting intimate in the second-floor bathroom and, on being discovered, were asked to leave the restaurant.

"Everybody should do their own thing but doing it at 5 o'clock in the afternoon in a McDonald's bathroom - whether you're female and female, female and male or male and male - what the f**k?" Police superintendent Michael Chitwood later told a local newspaper.

The entire incident might have ended peacefully, if a crowd of seven or eight people had not followed the two women outside and begun verbally assaulting them. According to Chitwood, some of the comments were insulting and provocative, such as: "Get out of here you dirty dykes".

The situation turned violent after a female attacker stabbed one of the two departing women. Reports say the suspect was a 40-year-old woman with two children. The weapon used remains unknown and the attacker is at large.

Police are reported to be reviewing surveillance tapes to identify the woman.

The injured woman needed to be persuaded to get medical treatment; she was taken to a nearby hospital and later released.
