Liverpool have suffered a massive injury blow after Mamadou Sakho limped out with a hamstring injury during their FA Cup sixth round 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Brendan Rodgers was without the services of Emre Can and Martin Skrtel for the clash at Ewood Park as the duo were suspended for the clash. The German midfielder-cum-defender will return for the upcoming clash against Newcastle United on Monday.

The Slovakian international will serve the last of the three-match ban he received for stamping David De Gea during the Reds' 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield. The Northern Irishman went back to the four-man defence against the Rovers.

Liverpool started with Sakho and Dejan Lovren in the heart of the back four. However, the French international was replaced in the 28th minute by Kolo Toure after he tried to clear the ball on the edge of his own box.

The Daily Mail claims Sakho will undergo a scan on Thursday to find out the extent of the injury. However, the report suggests the 25-year-old is likely to miss the home fixture against the Magpies on 14 April.

If Sakho fails to recover from his hamstring injury, Rodgers will be left with Lovren and Toure as the only two recognised centre-backs in the squad for the Newcastle clash. Can will be available for selection, but he is being played as the right centre-back of a three-man defence.

It should be seen whether the former Swansea manager will stick to 3-5-2 or if he will change to four-man-back-four on Monday. Jordan Henderson was the captain of the side during the FA Cup victory as the Reds are without the services of Steven Gerrard, who is also suspended for stamping United midfielder Ander Herrera.

Henderson was delighted with Toure and Lovren's performance against the Championship side, which helped Liverpool seal a berth in the last four of the FA Cup.

"We've had obviously suspensions and injuries over the last couple of weeks, but we've dealt with it really well, people have come in have done a great job," Henderson explained.

"I thought when Kolo came on he was immense at the back, especially towards the end. Him and Dejan was brilliant. So it was a great performance and gives everyone a lift now. We can really kick on to the end of the season."
