Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to add quality reinforcements before the transfer window closes next week after seeing a number of first team players pick up injuries in the League Cup victory over Notts County.

Rodgers fielded a strong side as Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Daniel Sturridge all played the full 120 minutes with Liverpool requiring extra-time to finally see off the League One side 4-2.

However, victory came at a price as Joe Allen, Kolo Toure and Aly Cissokho were all forced off due to injury and Rodgers now faces an anxious wait on the fitness of the trio.

Liverpool face Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday and it seems Rodgers may well be looking to sign another player before the champions make the short trip to Merseyside.

"There's no doubt we need more numbers but it's about quality - hopefully we can bring that quality in," Rodgers told the official Liverpool website.

Liverpool have enjoyed an impressive start to the season, winning their first two league games without conceding a goal, and have significantly strengthened with the likes of Toure, Cissokho, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet all joining.

Rodgers will hope to continue that good run with a positive result against United but admits that he will have to assess his options because of the injuries sustained.

"We'll assess the injuries tomorrow but we'll just see what players are available for us," Rodgers admitted.

With Sebastian Coates ruled out of action for the foreseeable future, and with Martin Skrtel just returning from injury, Rodgers may feel the need to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes on 2 September.

Andre Wisdom was used against Notts County but there is a belief that Liverpool will attempt to sign Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Mamadou Sakho who has already been capped on 14 occasions by France.
