FULL TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United

Old Trafford thinks Carrick has found the back of the net with a fierce half volley from the edge of the box, but a deflection takes it just wide! Newcastle clinging on.

Smalling hits the post! Memphis' corner finds the big centre half who nods down towards the bottom corner, only to be denied by the wood work. Newcastle break straight away and it is three on two in their advantage. Cisse dances across Blind and drags a shot across the face of goal, just missing the far post.

Four minutes of time added on at Old Trafford.

Papiss Cisse is now on for the slightly knackered looking Mitrovic.

Rooney tries to muscle his way through in the box but is somewhat harshly judged to have fouled Colback. The United skipper loses his rag at that decision and hurls a few choice words at the referee.

Valencia smashes a volley on goal from point blank range but Coloccini somehow gets his body in the way! United throw the resulting corner into the box and the big Argentine is there again to head clear.

Memphis pulls out to the left and curls in a high cross. Hernandez is United's only man in the box and he is swiftly crowded out and Krul claims.

Krul denies Hernandez! Mata's weak shot is charged down but the ball falls invitingly for the Mexican in the box. He tries to find the far corner but Krul is quickly out of his goal to charge down the shot and keep his side in the game.

Antonio Valencia comes on for his first appearance of the season to replace Darmian while Chieck Tiote comes on for Perez.

Shaw drives through the middle and receives the ball from Schneiderlin but he can't get the right connection on his shot and Krul saves.

Carrick sneaks into a wide position down the inside right and is slipped through by Darmian. He picks out a fine cross to find Memphis at the far post but he gets his header all wrong.

Schneiderlin does wonderfully well to intercept in his own half before springing forward and curling a ball through for Rooney down the inside left. He curls one in towards the far post where Mata is running into space but the Spaniard can't keep his volley down and lumps an effort well over the bar.

Thauvin's first involvement is to be hauled down by Luke Shaw, who gets a booking for his trouble.

Florian Thauvin is on for Newcastle, replacing Gabriel Obertan.

Adnan Januzaj's afternoon is over, Javier Hernandez enters the fray to try and help his side spark into life.

Mata whips a corner into the box and it almost falls kindly for Smalling in the six yard box, but the ball skips away from him. United are in need of a few fresh ideas here.

United work the ball from left to right looking for an opening but Mata overcooks a through ball which Darmian tried in vain to get on the end of. Michael Carrick looks like he is about to come on.

Hairdara down the other end slips past Darmian and wins a corner for his side. Blind gets a touch to just about guide it away. It's been a tame start to this half, Newcastle United very much on lockdown with United struggling to break them down.

Darmian plays a neat one two with Mata and scampers down the byline on the right, only for Perez to get back to him and put the ball out for a corner. United opt for a short one, but it eventually comes to nothing.

And we are back underway for the second half at Old Trafford.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United

United find themselves on the attack in a three on three situation but the move slows right down when the ball is pushed out wide to Mata. He tries to feed it back to Memphis whose approaching the edge of the box but he can't take the ball in his stride and Newcastle come away with the ball.

Smalling cuts the ball out from Wijnaldum's path but his clearance only gets as far as Perez who hits a low effort on goal. It veers just wide with Romero choosing to let it go, but the referee gives the corner anyway, but Newcastle waste it anyway.

Darmian again overlaps down the right and swings an inviting cross into the box but it's just too high for Rooney. Januzaj looks to be limping after being quickly closed down in the build up to that move.

A bit of a lull in the game now with Memphis and Mbemba guilty of some sloppy play. Since McClaren descended from the stands, Newcastle have definitely looked tighter at the back.

It's end to end stuff now. After that Newcastle chance, United are on the attack again with Memphis, who takes it around Krul but is forced too wide to shoot himself after a poor first touch. He tries to cut it back to Mata inside the six yard area but Mbemba makes an important sliding interception.

Newcastle hit the woodwork ! A wonderful cross comes in from the right from Mbemba and Mitrovic outleaps Darmian to connect with a looping header that comes back off the post.

Memphis comes down the right and dances past Mbemba before firing a shot straight at Krul. Should have perhaps looked across the box, where Rooney was lurking.

Much better from Newcastle now. Wijnaldum clips a wonderful little pass into the path of Haidara who has cut inside but is just beaten to it by Blind. Haidara clips the Dutchman as he attempts to bring the ball out of play, earning a yellow card for himself.

Darmian is booked for two cynical challenges in quick succession. Wijnaldum whips in an inviting free kick but United manage to clear their lines.

Rooney now threads a clever ball through for Memphis to run onto from deep, but the offside flag denies him the chance to bear down on goal. Steve McClaren is down from his station in the stands to bark some orders from the touchline.

Shaw stands up a cross towards the right of the box, with Darmian knocking the ball down to Mata. He twists, turns and fires low towards the near post, drawing a very decent save out of Krul. Seems just a matter of time before United find the breakthrough.

Shaw finds Januzaj in acres of space but his meek cross is blocked. United are strolling into acres of space down both wings at the moment.

Memphis comes over to the right and slips in behind the Newcastle back line after a neat one two with Mata. He drills the ball across goal but Haidara gets in the way. United corner.

Mata and Depay stand over it and the former wins the argument, lifting a left-footed effort over the ball but Krul saves rather comfortably.

Schweinsteiger spreads the ball from left to right to find Darmian, who advances towards the ball before he is hacked down by Perez. Free kick for United about 25 yards out from goal.

Depay, Mata and Rooney combine neatly around the edge of the box but just as the skipper attempts a reverse ball into the path of the Spaniard Colloccini nips in to intercept in a nick of time.

Rooney receives the ball from Memphis and lets a shot fly from 25 yards out. It's on target, but comfortably saved by Krul. All United at the moment.

Rooney finds the back of the net! The United skipper is sprung clear by Januzaj and waits for Krul to go down before clipping the ball over the Dutchman into the empty net. Only problem is, the offside flag is up. Replays suggest he was very unlucky with that..

32 seconds in, Mitrovic commits the first foul of game.

And Newcastle get us started at Old Trafford.

Both teams are making their way out onto the pitch, kick off is minutes away.

Louis van Gaal speaking to BT Sport.

I have to build him [Schweinsteiger] up. When you want to play him more for than 45 minutes you have to start with him.

"Everybody is saying he is a world champion and he has won a lot of things but every player has to prove that. To do that for Manchester United is not so easy but I have great confidence in him.

"I want to spare Michael Carrick for other matches. Last year he was very much injured and I want to prevent that."

Wayne Rooney's fairly dire form has been all the talk heading into today's game, but against today's opponent's he's usually done alright. The United skipper boasts a record of 12 goals and seven assists in his 20 Premier League appearances.

Some of them have been alright, I suppose.

Another reminder of those teams, then.

After being booked within two minutes of each of his appearances of the bench for Newcastle, Mitrovic is given his first full start by Steve McClaren today. It's an interesting selection; Daley Blind was widely praised for his performance at centre half against Villa last week but the aerial power of the hot-headed Serbian is likely to provide a much sterner test.

Elsewhere for the visiting side, Steven Taylor comes in for the suspended Janmaat while Moussa Sissoko misses out due to injury. New signing Florian Thauvin settles for a spot on the bench.

So Michael Carrick, who was at the epicentre of everything Manchester United did right last season, drops to the bench after a less than convincing display against Club Brugge last Tuesday. That hands a full debut to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has brought an element of control to this United side in each of his last two appearances from the bench.

Elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj retains his place after his winner in United's Premier League outing, while Memphis Depay's outstanding double against Club Brugge ensures he is going nowhere.

Ander Herrera's exile to the bench continues.

CONFIRMED: No place for Florian Thauvin in Steve McClaren's starting XI but their is a full debut for Aleksander Mitrovic.

Newcastle team to face Man Utd: Krul; Mbemba, Coloccini, Taylor, Haidara; Anita, Colback; Perez, Wijnaldum, Obertan; Mitrovic

Manchester United subs v Newcastle: Johnstone, McNair, Valencia, Carrick, Herrera, Young, Hernandez.

CONFIRMED: Bastian Schweinsteiger comes in for Michael Carrick against Newcastle this afternoon. Otherwise, it's as you were.

Man Utd team to face Newcastle: Romero; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Januzaj, Memphis; Rooney.

Early suggestions are that Bastian Schweinsteiger will make his full debut for the club this afternoon.

Manchester United haven't been at their sparkling best in these opening two games of the season but their formidable record against Newcastle United at this ground will have them feeling confident. The Magpies have won just once at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, a 1-0 victory in December 2013 during David Moyes' reign in charge.

Official line ups will be with us in about five minutes.

Manchester United team news:

Marouane Fellaini will serve the last of his three match suspension today while Phil Jones is still recovering from a bout of thrombosis. As Louis van Gaal hinted in his press conference this week, Bastian Schweinsteiger could make his first start for the club, having come off the bench in their first three games this term.

Newcastle team news:

£12m signing Florian Thauvin could be thrown straight in the deep end this afternoon. The 22-year-ld Frenchman, signed from Marseille this week, is in line to make his debut but Daryl Janmaat is unavailable after his red cad against Swansea last week.
