Liberal Democrat business secretary Vince Cable has sparked debate with his claim that the party would scrap the 50p tax rate in favour of a mansion tax.

The levy would see properties worth more than £2m taxed at 1 percent of their value.

The idea has antagonised Conservatives in the coalition, who say the tax would have to be preceded by costly re-evaluations of properties up and down the country.
