BioWare is boldly exploring various entertainment avenues for expanding the reach of its immensely popular "Mass Effect" franchise, besides unleashing various comic book narratives for the sci-fi series.

"Mass Effect: Paragon Lost" is the first of its kind animated film from FUNimation and Production IG (joint venture) in association with BioWare. The animated graphics and production is handled by the makers of the "Ghost in the Shell" series fame. Atsushi Takeuchi will don the director's role for the movie, while Henry Gilroy will write the script.

There are spoilers ahead for both the film and the final installment of the game - "Mass Effect 3" - so, tread with caution!

"Paragon Lost" precedes the events that are documented in ME3 and depicts the tour of one of the Normandy's newest crew members: James Vega. In ME3, Vega continually makes reference, in his conversation with Commander Shepard, of his service record with the Alliance and this is precisely what "Paragon Lost" will explore, according to GamingUnion. The film will chronicle parts of Vega's background before fast-forwarding to the events that eventually led to his appointment aboard the Normandy.

BioWare has released a trailer to give you a glimpse of the concept and pre-production art from the film, in addition to revealing some characters franchise fans may recognise, including one from an ancient alien race.

Here is the synopsis of the film published on the official Web site:

"Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is the prequel to the highly-anticipated Mass Effect 3 and follows the early career of Alliance Marine, James Vega. Vega leads an elite Special Forces squad into battle against a mysterious alien threat known as The Collectors. Stationed at a colony in a remote star system, Vega and his soldiers must protect the civilians from a ruthless invasion determined to capture the population for unknown purposes. Learn more about the Mass Effect universe with an unprecedented glimpse into the haunted past of Mass Effect's newest hero!"
