Meghan Markle
Netflix insiders say the split with Meghan Markle's As Ever brand came because the lifestyle label failed to generate meaningful interest on the platform, not simply because Markle wanted independence. E! News / Youtube

Meghan Markle earned a negative reputation shortly after she married Prince Harry. The American actress was beginning to build a profile in the industry when she relocated to the UK, but her transition to royal life proved difficult. The couple cited a lack of institutional support and concerns over media intrusion and racial bias before stepping back from senior royal duties in 2020 and eventually settling in California with their family.

Back in her home country, Markle has continued to attract public scrutiny. Most recently, she has faced accusations of disruptive behaviour and has been linked to the end of the Sussexes' partnership with Netflix.

Why Meghan Markle is Branded 'Childish'

Separate statements from Netflix and the Sussexes' teams suggest both parties parted on amicable terms, with each expressing gratitude for the working relationship. Despite this, multiple reports have attributed the breakdown to Markle and Prince Harry.

A Netflix insider recently claimed that the streaming platform's relationship with the Sussexes became strained some time ago. There were reportedly instances in which Markle left her Zoom meetings with Netflix executives when she took offence at certain discussions. This behaviour has labelled the Duchess of Sussex as 'childish.'

The same insider also claimed that Markle would interrupt Prince Harry during discussions with Netflix executives by placing her hand on his arm or thigh. These claims align with earlier reports about Markle directing her husband's conduct during meetings.

In Defence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Markle's lawyer, Michael J Kump, denied the allegations, explaining that Markle would mute her microphone or step away from meetings to attend to her two young children, Archie and Lilibet, and did not wish to distract Netflix executives in the process.

Kump also addressed the reports about Markle's conduct toward her husband: 'Seems calculated to play into the misogynistic characterisation of her bossing her husband around,' he said. Prince Harry similarly described the claims as 'categorically false.'

Netflix Had Issues With the Sussexes Early On

The end of the Sussexes' partnership with Netflix has reignited wider speculation about the couple's professional conduct. The Sussexes signed their reported $100 million (approximately £77.5 million) deal with the streaming platform in 2020, shortly after relocating to the US, as part of a broader effort to establish financial independence from the royal family and build a media presence on their own terms. Reports indicate that Netflix had grown frustrated with the timing of the Sussexes' other projects and partnerships.

The Sussexes announced a partnership with Spotify shortly after signing with Netflix, which ended after a single series of 'Archetypes.' Netflix was also not informed in advance about the couple's plans to sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a televised interview. Netflix was further scheduled to release the documentary 'Harry & Meghan' around the same time as Prince Harry's memoir, 'Spare', though an insider noted the documentary had already been scheduled for December 2022, making the overlap unavoidable.

At the time of publication, Markle and Prince Harry had not directly responded to the broader speculation surrounding their departure from Netflix.
