Meghan Markle does not have a close relationship with Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate Middleton. When she first joined the royal family, there were hopes that she would be a wonderful addition to the Fab Four. Things changed quickly after she and Prince Harry got engaged, and the divisions have played out publicly ever since.

Several accounts of the Sussexes' feud with Prince William and Princess Kate have emerged over the years, some directly from Harry and Markle, and others from royal biographers and authors who had no direct access to either couple.

Meghan Markle, Prince William's Heated Confrontation

A new book from Tom Bower claims that Markle had a heated encounter with Prince William just before her royal wedding in 2018. During a phone call between Markle and Middleton, the latter reportedly reminded the former 'Suits' actress that she had forgotten something related to the upcoming wedding. Markle, drawing on her American sense of humour, told the future queen that she had 'baby brain.' The comment, casual by American standards, landed very differently in a royal household where the two women were still getting to know each other.

The remark did not sit well with Middleton, given that the two women were not close enough at the time to exchange that kind of joke. Bower claimed that Prince William confronted Markle and pointed his finger at her in defence of his wife. The gesture angered Markle, who reportedly told Prince William to get his finger out of her face.

Sussexes Release Statement on Tom Bower's Book

A spokesperson for the Sussexes denied Bower's claims and accused the royal biographer of overstepping. 'Mr Bower's commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation. This is someone who has publicly stated, "the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life," language that speaks for itself,' they said.

The spokesperson also urged those seeking facts to look elsewhere, suggesting Bower's account is untrue. In his own memoir Spare, however, Prince Harry discussed the alleged tensions between Markle and Middleton himself, revealing that the two women clashed over Princess Charlotte's dress ahead of the wedding.

Prince Harry's Version of Events

Just four days before the Sussexes' wedding, Princess Kate discovered that Princess Charlotte's dress was too big and wanted the outfit remade entirely. Given the limited time available, Markle suggested her tailor could make the alterations. The disagreement escalated, and Prince Harry returned home to find his wife in tears. The following day, Princess Kate sent Markle flowers and a card to apologise.

The alleged tension between the two women reportedly stemmed from differences in personality and cultural background. Making a joke about having 'baby brain,' for instance, was something Markle would do with friends back home. Similarly, Harry recounted an episode where Markle borrowed Princess Kate's lip gloss without hesitation, an act that reportedly caught his sister-in-law off guard. Harry defended his wife by explaining it was simply 'an American thing.' This served as a reminder that what felt natural to Markle did not always translate in her new environment.
