Miley Cyrus has sparked questions over whether she is entering a new mononymous era after dropping her famous surname from her social media branding just days before launching her next major musical chapter.

Now appearing simply as 'Miley,' the Grammy-winning singer has timed the mysterious switch with the announcement of her 10th studio album, Bass Persuades, but has yet to publicly explain whether the change is permanent.

'Bass Persuades' Era Begins

The apparent rebrand emerged shortly before Miley announced that Bass Persuades will be released on 18 September.

Her social media accounts were updated to emphasise 'Miley,' accompanied by a dramatic new profile image showing the singer under red lighting while wearing a Saint Laurent faux fur coat.

The one-name branding has also appeared beyond social media. A red promotional poster featuring Miley's face, her official website and 'MILEY' in capital letters wrapped the print edition of the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, adding to signs that the shortened name is part of a wider campaign.

The timing has fuelled speculation that Miley is adopting a mononym for her new album era, following stars including Cher, Madonna, Prince and Beyoncé.

Why Did Miley Cyrus Drop Her Last Name?

Miley has not announced that she has legally changed her name, nor has she publicly given a specific reason for removing 'Cyrus' from her latest branding.

For now, the strongest indication is that the change is professional and connected to the rollout of Bass Persuades. Whether 'Miley' will permanently replace 'Miley Cyrus' as her stage name remains unclear.

The move comes as the singer embraces themes of change and personal evolution in her new music.

'Bass Persuades' Marks Miley's New Musical Chapter

Announcing the album, Miley described what its title represents to her and the emotional power she associates with music.

'Music takes hold of us. We feel it, sing it, sometimes dance to it, let it out and carry on,' she wrote. 'It is powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong. Heart full, heartache, every part of life in between.'

Earlier this year, Miley told Wonderland that the album is a love story, although she stressed that love is never 'one-dimensional.'

She said the record contains a romantic thread reflecting where she currently is in life, while describing the feeling behind it as something that has remained with her 'through multiple eras.'

Maxx Morando Romance Shapes Miley's New Music

The new album also arrives during a significant period in Miley's personal life. She and musician Maxx Morando, her boyfriend of more than four years, announced their engagement in December.

Speaking to Wonderland, Miley described a 'peaceful kind of love' as a theme running through her recent records, encompassing not only her relationship with another person but also her relationship with herself.

'Once your relationship with yourself changes, every relationship around you changes too,' she said.

Dolly Parton and Miley's 'Metamorphosis' Conversation

Miley also recently invoked the idea of transformation while paying tribute to her godmother, Dolly Parton.

Following Parton's death, Miley wrote on Instagram that one of their final conversations had been about 'music and metamorphosis.' She did not, however, connect that conversation directly to dropping the Cyrus surname.

Following the release of Bass Persuades, Miley is scheduled to perform two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl on 16 and 18 October. Ticket presales are due to begin on 8 September.
