Rider's championship review

Vinales replaced Jorge Lorenzo at Yamaha after the latter signed for Ducati for this season. The 22-year-old Spaniard was impressive in Qatar as he won the race on his Yamaha debut at the Losail International Circuit.

Rossi was also successful in making it to the top three in the first race of the season, leaving defending champion Marc Marquez and his Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa for a fourth and fifth place finish respectively.

Vinales clinched 25 points and is leading the rider's leaderboard, with Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso five points behind him in the second place. Rossi is third with 16 points, while Marquez and Pedrosa have 13 and 11 points respectively.
