Nine-Year-Old Mexican Girl Gives Birth, Teenaged Father on the Run

A nine-year-old Mexican girl has given birth. Identified as Dafne, she is the mother of a surprisingly healthy baby girl, who weighed in at 5lbs, 5oz, was born in the city of Guadalajara in Mexico. Authorities believe the father is a 17-year-old boy.

In a statement given to ABC news, Lino Ginzalez Corona, a spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor's Office, said police are on the lookout for the teenage father, who has been in hiding for two months.

Corona's statement adds: "Her parents work all day and were not watching after her, and therefore didn't realise what was about to happen. She did not realize that she was pregnant until the seventh month. Due to her young age, we don't know if she is being entirely truthful."

According to Spanish news agency EFE, the girl told her mother about the boy. Unfortunately, the boy fled after the girl's mother refused to let the two children live together and raise the child, as he proposed. The young girl lives with her parents (and 10 siblings) in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, 25 miles south of Guadalajara.

Dafne gave birth via a c-section, on 27 January. However, Enrique Rabago, the director of the hospital where the child was born, cautioned local press that while the mother and her daughter had been discharged, the stress of the situation may cause problems for the former, given her young age. The mother is believed to be under close observation and is being given constant psychological counselling.

"We are looking for the young man to get his story because the girl does not understand what has happened," Jorge Villasenor, another representative from the prosecutor's office," said, "This is either rape or child sex abuse."

As far as is known, the youngest mother on record is a girl from Peru, who delivered a child when she was five years and seven months old. This happened in 1939.
