Nigeria university student Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola has been crowned the winner of Muslimah World 2013, an all-Muslim beauty pageant.

The 21-year-old, who is a native of the Yoruba tribe, beat 19 other hopefuls, after wowing the judges with her knowledge on the Koran and her refreshing philosophy on Islam in the modern world.

When her name was announced as the winner at the Jakarta pageant, she dropped to her knees and thanked "almighty Allah" before reciting a Koranic verse. Her prizes included 25 million rupiah (£1,375) and trips to Mecca and India.

"The event was not really about competition," she told AFP. "We're just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful."

Organisers said that the pageant challenged the idea of beauty and strengthened self-development in Muslim women.

All contestants were required to wear a headscarf (hijab).
