Golf Star Phil Mickelson Completes Stay at Addiction and Family Trauma Treatment Facility
The six-time major champion has played only one professional tournament in 2026 and has not announced when he will return to competition

Golf star Phil Mickelson has completed a stay at a treatment facility after voluntarily seeking help for 'family trauma and addiction', his representative has confirmed, providing new context to the six-time major champion's prolonged absence from competitive golf in 2026.
The 56-year-old recently entered the undisclosed facility and has since left, according to reports published on Wednesday, 30 September. Details about when Mickelson entered treatment, how long he remained there and the specific programme he underwent have not been disclosed.
Mickelson Sought Treatment for 'Family Trauma and Addiction'
'Phil was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,' a representative for Mickelson told TMZ Sports.
It was first reported that Mickelson had voluntarily checked himself into the facility amid ongoing personal issues. PEOPLE subsequently confirmed through a representative that the golfer was no longer receiving treatment at the facility as of Wednesday.
The development follows an unusually quiet year for Mickelson, who has played just one professional tournament in 2026.
He competed at LIV Golf South Africa in March, finishing tied for 48th, but later withdrew from the Masters while saying his family was navigating a personal health matter. His absence ultimately extended across all four major championships.
Mickelson Stepped Away From Golf Over Family Health Matter
Questions surrounding Mickelson's absence had persisted for months.
In February, he said he would miss the first two LIV Golf events because he and his wife, Amy Mickelson, needed to be present for a family health matter. In April, he announced an extended break from competitive golf.
His representatives addressed his priorities again in June, saying: 'Mr. Mickelson's priority is to become the husband, father, and man his family deserves.'
They added that he was giving his 'full attention to a private family health matter' and asked that his family's privacy be respected.
The latest statement identifies family trauma and addiction as reasons Mickelson sought treatment, although his representatives have not disclosed further details about the underlying family circumstances.
Phil Mickelson Previously Revealed Gambling Addiction
Mickelson has previously spoken publicly about his struggle with gambling addiction.
In 2023, the American golfer acknowledged that he had 'crossed the line of moderation and into addiction' and said he had received professional help for years.
Mickelson said his financial security had not been threatened but acknowledged that gambling had left him distracted and unable to be fully present with loved ones, causing significant harm to his personal relationships.
Treatment News Comes After Misconduct Allegations
Mickelson's treatment also comes after he faced separate misconduct allegations earlier this year.
Golf Digest reported in June that a female employee at The Farms Golf Club in California accused Mickelson of 'nonconsensual and inappropriate physical contact'. His lawyer disputed the allegation and said video evidence contradicted the account.
The club confirmed that a staff member had reported misconduct and that the member involved was no longer part of the club, without publicly identifying Mickelson.
Ashley Perez, the former wife of professional golfer Pat Perez, later made separate allegations about Mickelson's past behaviour, including that he propositioned her in 2015. Mickelson's representatives disputed the broader reporting surrounding the claims.
There has been no confirmed connection between those allegations and Mickelson's stay at the treatment facility.
Mickelson's representative has said only that he sought treatment for 'family trauma and addiction'. No timetable for his return to professional golf has been announced.
