Vivek Ramaswamy's campaign for Ohio governor has cut a man from a television advertisement after reports revealed he is a registered sex offender convicted of offences involving a child.

Vernon Edwards appeared in background footage of a property tax ad that centred on his wife, Patty, a farmer from Amherst. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to two counts of gross sexual imposition in a case involving a minor and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

The Ramaswamy campaign said it had no knowledge of his record and had removed him from the ad.

A Property Tax Ad and a County Fair Handshake

The ad features Patricia 'Patty' Edwards, who says she fears losing her family farm because of rising property taxes, Raw Story reported, citing The Bulwark, which first revealed the connection.

Ramaswamy's campaign describes the spot as based on a real encounter with an Ohio woman at a county fair. Vernon Edwards does not speak but appears in B-roll while his wife talks.

The footage traces back to a meeting at the Lorain County Fair in late summer. Amherst is a small city in Lorain County, about 30 miles west of Cleveland. Ramaswamy posted a video of the encounter in which Vernon Edwards shook his hand and the candidate complimented his patriotic shirt. About six weeks later, the campaign released the television spot.

The ad drew wider attention after the political advertising tracker Medium Buying shared it on X on 13 October 2026. The Bulwark then matched the man in the footage to court records and the sex offender registry.

A 2006 Conviction

According to The Bulwark, Vernon Edwards pleaded guilty in October 2006 to two counts of gross sexual imposition, an offence under Ohio law involving unlawful sexual contact, in a case involving an underage girl. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and remains listed on the Lorain County sex offender registry. Reports differ on the girl's exact age.

The New Republic reported that he had also faced similar allegations involving his nieces. According to The Bulwark, those allegations were not prosecuted because the statute of limitations had expired, and he was not convicted over them.

The Bulwark, a centre-right news site, argued that basic vetting could have caught the problem, although it is not known what checks the campaign carried out. Court records list a Vernon Edwards at the same Amherst address as the couple, and his registry photograph appears to show the same shirt that Ramaswamy praised at the fair.

Patty Edwards defended her husband. She told The Bulwark the accusations against him were 'false' and claimed prosecutors had withheld evidence. She said the ad was about her, not her husband. 'I am not accused of anything,' she said, adding: 'Vivek reached out to me.'

Campaign Pulls the Footage

Ramaswamy's spokesperson, Evan Machan, said the campaign had not known about Vernon Edwards's past. 'We had no knowledge of the circumstances now being reported,' he told The Bulwark. 'The man has been removed from the ad.'

The campaign said it was recutting the advertisement to remove him. It has also deleted the fair video. At least one Republican state representative who had shared it removed it as well, according to Raw Story.

Democrats moved quickly. 'Whether Vivek Ramaswamy and his campaign were just being sloppy or whether they think this predator's disgusting behaviour is acceptable, it's absolutely disqualifying to give star billing to a pedophile,' said Izzi Levy, a spokesperson for the Democratic Governors Association.

The story spread on social media. A post from the news account FactPost stating that Ramaswamy 'aired a campaign ad featuring a registered sex offender' had been viewed more than 88,000 times by Thursday, 15 October. Many of the replies mocked the campaign.

A Close Race for Governor

Ramaswamy, the biotech entrepreneur who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 and was named to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency with Elon Musk before stepping away to run for governor, is the Republican nominee to succeed term-limited Governor Mike DeWine. He has Donald Trump's endorsement.

He faces Democrat Amy Acton, a physician and Ohio's former health director who led the state's early response to the Covid-19 pandemic, in the 3 November election. The New Republic has described the contest as close.

Property taxes have been a prominent issue in Ohio politics after sharp rises in home valuations in recent years. The ad was designed to put a sympathetic face on Ramaswamy's pledge to ease the burden on homeowners and farmers. Ramaswamy, 41, has also campaigned on phasing out Ohio's state income tax and has made cost of living the centre of his pitch to voters.

The episode leaves his campaign answering questions about its vetting less than three weeks before polling day.
