Police recovered the body of a man in the River Foss

North Yorkshire police are investigating the unexplained death of a man who was found in the River Foss earlier today (Tuesday).

A member of the public spotted the man in the river, which runs through York, near Layerthorpe.

Police were alerted to the incident at 11.30am and called in assistance from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue who launched a boat. The body was then recovered by the fire boat crew just after 12.40pm.

The man's next of kin are still being traced and it is not thought he will be identified until at least Wednesday.

A North Yorkshire Police statement said: "The circumstances of the death are unexplained at this time as the investigation continues on behalf of the coroner."
